welding stainless steel to steel

    This is probably a stupid question. Can i weld my stainless steel headlight rings to my steel fenders? if so what kind of rod do i use.

    If you are using a TIG welder use stainless rod.

    You can weld it with mig too just use stainless wire. I used to do 304 to mild steel all the time for industrial blowers.

    I'm sure someone can chime in that knows what grade of Stainless your headlight rings are

    your sposta use 309 SS rod or wire,
    but if you use 308 it will work fine on a low strength application.

    Just for anyone who's interested. You can also weld stainless steel with a gas torch. When you get the flame adjusted add just a little more acetylene to give you about a 1" feather on the flame. It's amazing, it will flow like ****er. You can also use SS trim cut in small strips for filler rod.
