We had a little car show back in May here in Enid and I ran into a gentleman I go to church with named Dennis. He was looking over the T and in the conversation he mentioned he was a bit of a hotrodder in his day. Now Dennis is a little older than I (i'm 60)and I just never figured him for a car guy so when he said he had a panel painted 54 Merc I said that was cool, that I realy liked the 52-56 Mercs. Then he said IT HAD A HEMI in it! Now anyone else I would have thought ,yea, sure, but I know this guy. So I asked if he had any pictures. Well today he dropped them by. The Model A is his first car. $50 4dr. Check out the flames! The Merc was called the Outcast, and the show was in Enid OK. I actually remember going to that show with my Dad when I was about 13 years old. It was put on by the Playboys CC from Enid in Convention Hall. This was pre panel job. Dennis told me he later sold the car but without the hemi, he swapped an Olds in before it was sold and put the hemi in his 40 Ford panel truck. No pics but I tend to belive him. Enjoy.
I've learned that whenever a non hotrod looking guy makes any comment on my old car that I should ask, "Do you have an old car?"
That's so cool. You can tell that even those photos have some mileage on them. I just realized that I've had a few cars I've lost images of due to computers crashing or lost CDs. This thread has inspired me print some photos.
i always wanted to see what a hemi would look like in those cars..im stillthinking about putting my 331 in my 53
Kool post George.....Did you do the flames on the sedan? Seems like I read more old magaziones themn new ones and I'm a big fan of this style of flame. If ya want traditonal that would be it.... Thanks for sharing the pics. Happy Trails, Mick
Mick, not sure I was even around when those were done. I agree, it don't get more traditional than that. I thought of you when I posted this up.
Kool then I don't have to tell ya I was drool'n when I was looking at the pictures. I wonder if guys would get it if flame jobs like this tried to make a comback? Sure would be a lot easier masking them off.... See ya next month!
COOL STORY... Nothing better than talking to the guys that were there (back in the day) I had an old guy approach my me and my 1962 Corvette many years ago. We talked for a long time, then he invites me to his house to see the Corvettes he bought new. His car was a 65 FI coupe in race clothing since new. His wife's car a 63 split window with A/C & PG. We BS'd some more, then he says he has some parts I can have since he no longer has a C1. I ended up with 3 pickup loads of old Vette stuff including some missing parts for my '54. When old guys talk.......... listen to them. At the very least, you'll learn something.
Great story. Some times the guys you might least expect were knee deep into this car stuff at some point in their lives.
No kidding! The old timers that stand back and quietly admire, are usually the ones with the most knowledge of what they're looking at. Very cool!
