I found this toolbox in someone's trash. A quick clean and lube and I can't find any reason it was tossed besides it being old. It is, however missing the front metal panel that slides under the bottom drawer, and when closed it prevents the drawers from coming open. Does anyone know where I can find a front panel? I could probably make one, but...

Actually, that appears to be a Kennedy machinist's toolbox. You could see if they are still in business....I have one of those boxes that I no longer use....we could discuss something I suppose.

but don't respond in here...send me an email at dwjinc02@yahoo.com

You might want to ask the same question over at the Garage Journal (link at bottom of this page). There are a lot of tool and tool box experts over there.
I've learned a lot about the old boxes I've been bringing home lately.

Kennedy is still in business and if you can find the original label on the box, chances are you'll still find it in their catalog.

I have a similar box that I believe dates from 1941, when my father received it as a Christmas present from his father. It sat in a closet till around 1970 or so when he gave it to me for Christmas. I'll excuse him for re-gifting :).
The case and front cover is made of vinyl covered wood and the drawers are metal. there are metal protectors on the corners of the case. The lid has mirror and a spring clip for holding papers.

I made one out of stainless for an old Kennedy I found, put a brushed finish on it, looks pretty sharp. A right angle at the top of the panel, with two holes for the locking pins, and a 30 degree bend at the bottom, with two reliefs ground in. Finger hole to get in on and off, and you have the only one on your block.

  8. Nice score! I have them with both the Craftsman and Kennedy logos and as has been said they were made by Kennedy.Shouldn't be too hard to make a front out of either steel or wood.

Thanks guys. As usual, a lot of quick, good help. I will look into the sources, but propwash might have a full box for me if I can get my **** back to Vegas. I'll just set this one aside and use it for something else, perhaps all my woodworking hand tools and model building supplies. There are no labels on this thing besides the Craftsman on the drawer, and some "Erson Cams" stickers neatly placed on the underside of the lid. There looks to be a spot under the lid where there used to be some kind of label, but other than that I can't find anything. I might make a front like Harry described in the future, but I can't right now. The box is pretty beat up, but still holds up to carrying all of my Striping supplies around. I still don't see why someone would toss it... Just getting tired of moving it, drawers sliding out and my stuff falling out.

I do not see any locking pins so it may not be a Kennedy but may be a Waterloo or one of the other vendors who make similar boxes. ( there are very small minor detail changes between the vendors) All the boxes function the same they hold precision tools safely.

It has the locking pins, you just can't see them because the lid isn't fully closed. :)
