My kidneys hurt just from reading that. I thought I had encountered most of the automotive routes to sudden death years ago...obviously there are lots more waiting out there!

Hey thank you. I had NOT seen this over the weekend - I was on the road. And all last week I was working on my coupe. So thanks.

who cares if it's been posted before. Post it EVERY day. The story/warning really hits home to those of us who weld every day.

It would be nice if this could become a sticky.

This may have been on here a week ago but I'm another one who says that it should be given a sticky.

Just like Bruce, I have done enough to my poor body in the past 62 years that I don't need to take anymore chances and many of us are guilty of misusing products that we have in the garage without giving it a second thought.

Many of us commonly use brake cleaner as a degreaser in the shop and welding on a piece that had been recently cleaned with brake cleaner could be something that could happen quite often.

I also use brake (and carb) cleaner on everything.

Enjenjo- I did not know about R12 either! Thanks for that!

Most of us know about similar issues with galvanized metals and welding too- but this really surprised me when I read it, and although I don't weld often, I do weld (badly). I'd have never even thought about this...

    R12 refrigerant!?!?
Man....I feel even luckier now. Lots of time spent welding on the fronts of AC cars with busted AC systems.

Thank God I had the sense to wash it off with brake clean before welding!

I do some bad welding and one of my boys welds all the time in the seabees can you tell me what it said?

    Thanks.......

All it says now is "This will be an article that will be in the August Issue of American Iron Magazine"

  18. It's not just R-12, several blends of Freon break down to Phosgene at the right temperature. Next time you see an HVAC guy smoking while he services your A/C...slap him upside the head. Chloro-Flourocarbons are nasty.
Here's the other post if you want to see what some of the others have experienced.

Thanks Scotch, sometimes it takes a different ***le to get folks to read important information, and around here, stuff moves back to page 3-5 pretty quick.

Sorry my computer is just slower than a lowrider. Thanks it finally loaded.

  20. Basically, CFC's brake down to Phosgene gas or Mustard gas (Hydrogen Chloride gas(?)) in the presence of heat. This stuff will seriously burn your lungs, cause serious nerve damage...Oh yeah IT CAN KILL YOU! Mustard gas was used in the trenches in WWI.
Google mustard gas and Phosgene gas to get an idea what can happen. A couple of guys commented on the health effects they have experienced by making this same mistake.

The guy was welding. Usually used carb cleaner, ran out, grabbed brake cleaner instead. Long story short, after suffering for days he ended up in the ER (where he should have gone that day) and now has permanent damage to his lungs and nervous system.

    Read warning labels.
Think twice about using chemicals for other than their prescribed use.

I'm another voice for making stuff like this a sticky item. I also don't care if it's been posted 1000 times already, it's valuable info that could save your life.

WOW, I'm in the first year of HVAC training, I've heard that mentioned in cl***. Really never thought much of it. I'm very thankful to have seen this thread. May have literally saved my life. I also have a tendency to clean nearly everything with brake/carb cleaners, so I will be rethinking some of my cleaning habits.

BTT So everyone can read it. Hell, if it saves one person from a horrible mistake I'll bump it every day.

You just need to wait for the huge image to slowly load. I lost patience and gave up after 2 inches.

It's also be posted on eBay on the Motors Discussion Board (a number of us are regulars both places). Can't be posted enough, IMO.

Both 'Scotch' and 'The 37 Kid' deserve our thanks for posting this important information. The more people that see this the better.Judging by the responses on both threads,it's made a lot of people think again about what chemicals they use and how they use them(myself included).Possibly saved a life or two as well!
    Thanks guys
