My 49 might have made it down to the pileup yesterday, had it not been for the fact that I didn't do enough homework on my transmission. The c4 I have has a 4 wire pigtail coming off of it, with a molex connector at the end (square). Does anybody have an idea of what it is? I'm also looking for any tips on what might make a c4 make a sound like trying to put a manual into gear without using a clutch Just a little background. I have 2 c4's. One came attached, with a torque converter and flexplate to the 302 that I originally bought to fix up for the car (****** 1). The other was 'supposidly' reubilt, and came with a torque converter but no flexplate (****** 2). I used ****** 2, but with the torque converter and flexplate from ****** 1. ****** 2 has the pigtail, ****** 1 doesn't. -S
I thought the pigtail is for the neutral saftey switch..., I guess it might have something to do with the Kickdown as well...! Does Bugman have any info on this from "Shifts"...? Mark
Hard to say without hearing it, but years ago I mixed&matched converters & transmissions & the converters were different sizes where the input shafts go in. Made a really bad sound like you describe & wouldn't move. The 4 pin connector is for the safety switch.
Yes, input shafts are smaller on the early C4s. As far as the connector, its only a neutral safety & backup light switch. DAVE
Dave, So does that sound like it is just a problem with the torque converter--or is it likely something else on the ****** is weird? Is this likely to cause any damage to the transmission from maybe 1 minute total in gear, at idle, with no load on the wheels? -S
Any time theres a grinding noise in an automatic its not good. I'm gonna be gone this afternoon, but why dont you give me a call tomorrow morn & we can sort it out. DAVE
Hey Scott..., It does sound as if you've got the wrong Torq convertor shaft size... ! Either way I think the engine and trany should come out...! Sorry Bro...! Mark
Managed to get the ****** low enough to pull out the torque converter. The input shaft on the ****** I didn't put in pulls right out and fits inside the torque converter that was on the motor. The input shaft that is on the ****** in the car right now will turn, but won't pull straight out. It turns but I can't get any forward or backward movement out of it. Is this normal? Or not. I wondered if there was some fluid left in the transmission that is causing a vaccuum that I can't break? Or I could be talking out my ***. Any thoughts?

Unfortunately, the torque converter I just removed had a 3,500 rpm stall. So If the current ****** is broke I gotta fix it. -S
Have Bugman go through the ****** and just install it after it's rebuilt with it's matching stall converter! Then sell the one you took out of your car as well as the Merc engine and ******..., that way you can recover most of the cost of the swap! Mark
