The company I work for runs 3 estate / liquidation sales every week. Between us & the local compe***ion there are at least 12 estate sales every weekend. They you have the diy sales & yard / garage sales. No shortage of good deals on tools & stuff around here (sadly very little speed equipment but I keep looking) . With the Chevy Tonawanda Plant running a bare bones crew more & more stuff shows up every weekend. Last week a buddy bought a Walker Turner drill press for 20 bucks! Probably late 50's vintage but looked like brand new.

I need every sq. ft in my garage as it is - so I put in an "I" beam with a trolley. Best thing I ever did. I found the "I" beam and got it for the price of hauling it away (they were thrilled to get rid of it and I was thrilled to get it for free)

I have exactly ZERO dollars in mine. I made the trolley out of some 1/2" plate and scavenged the wheels off some junk at work. It was a little work getting it installed, but over the years that has paid off big time IMHO.

I have an el cheapo, and never had problem with it.

Most rental places have them to rent too, if it is only a one time thing.

If you need it many times, then but the bullet and buy a good one.

I bought a nice product of the Democratic Peoples Republic of China from Pep Boys. It's rated at 2 tons. Folds up looks good and fits well togeather for $115 with the rebate. Makes me glad I( don't need a job.

I have an $18.00 auction cherry picker (USA) and a $50.00 1000lb capacity jib crane in my shop.

I've seen two Chi-Com cherry pickers bend with an engine on... I guess the child/slave labor workers don't check the thickness of the steel before they ship 'em...

Not only would you get a similar lift, you'd get the EXACT same hoist... I got mine at Tractor Supply, which is the same as the Craftsman, which is the same as you get at Autozone/Advanced/etc., which is the same as the Harbor Freight, which is the same as the Goodyear, which is the same as the jobber at the speed shop I worked at... They all come off the same boat from China, the expensive part is the paint and the sticker they slap on it, but they're all in the $200 ballpark. Seriously. I'm glad I bought mine, it's one of those things you'll find more uses for than you'd think, after discounts and specials (I got a couple) and it being the last one, I got mine for about $125, at 9:00PM (your options are limited then).

The leveler that comes with them is an absolute piece of ****. It'll chew itself up the first time you use it, it's junk. Don't even use it, it's more trouble than it's worth. A decent one is a good investment.

EDIT: OOOWW... Coupon... I was thinkin' about buyin' the little 4-ton Porta Power... Hum...

Here's 20% off if you decide to buy it this weekend.

By the way, I get this coupon every week via email
by signing on to HF online. I think I actually ordered
something online once and have been on their list ever
since. 20% off on top of there crazy cheap sales is worth
a weekly spam mail from them.

I bought my no name at the Dearborn Ford swap for $80. It was a bolt together Hoist not collapsable(sp) and I welded it together. Installed larger steel swivel casters from HF (their best ones) and a US made ram and I'm not afraid to lift 2 tons with it. I did extend the front legs 18 inches to stop the tendency to rock forward. My prior one was homemade/shop built I got for free, and I had dumped a couple of engines from poor design.

The quality of tools at HF was much better even 5 or 6 years ago. They only carry junk now. I would not risk my limbs, or friends limbs to a cherry picker from them. Go rent one.

Mine is a ***mins tool or some other fly by night tool truck unit that I paid 100 bucks for. It will do what I need it to do and that is all I ask. Half the time I use my A frame with the chain hoist anyhow. True, I probably wouldn't have bought it if I had intended to use it in a business where I was using it daily but for the couple of times a month I need to lift something it works great as long as I watch what I'm doing. By that I mean I don't lift wrong with it and I don't overload it. Too many of us end using equipment for something it wasn't designed to do and tearing it up an what ever we were trying to work on or move along with it.

    Don,
26 years ago things were a little better as to quality. My experience with HF or Northern Tools in hydraulics is not a good one. Having 2 cherry pickers and one since 68 eventually the units go down. I purchased a replacement unit from HF and that lead to 8 replacements due to m***ive leakage and valve failure. I for one am not impressed with there jacks in any form period. I know law of averages someone will get a good one but I was not that lucky. American built hydraulic jacks of any type seem to me the way to go but are pricey so it becomes a personal choice.

I bought one at Pep Boys for $120. I've been using it for a couple of years now and had no problems. Its a fold away and gets lots of abuse.

Where can you buy a good replacement ram for a cherry picker? I just got a nice older one but the ram was junk and I need a new one. It's a nice unit and I'd hate to put a cheap piece of **** ram on it but I have to take what is available.

If you have a place to hang it from, a chain fall is easy to store.

Craigslist is your friend! If you wait long enough and are diligent, you will get what you want at a good price. I picked this up a month ago:

Not Chinese! This was made in the late 1970's. Harbor Freight has a poor knock off available of the same machine. Costs a lot more than the $200 I paid for this.

You will, however, note in the background the HF engine cherry picker that I used to remove this from my pick-up truck bed! Sometimes you can't wait long enough!

If you have a rebuildable hydraulic unit look in the yellow pages. Many craftsman out there repair them. I would up having my unit repaired and junked the HF "JaP" units. They will get you hurt in the long run.

I bought one on craiglist when i was working on the 54 for 75 bucks with an engine stand...then sold it on craiglist for a 100 bucks.... like Casey said on the first page they get in the way...unless you have more room than you need which NEVER seems to be the case... Good Luck

My cherry picker is 100% US-built. Right now, I am not near it, but I'll PM you with the brand. Works great!
