Want to go with a complete 9" rear in the f1 Disc, posi 3.00 or so gears. Not for raceing but heavy duty street. Who have you been happy with, and ball park cost if you know? Thanks, Eric
Have bought many from Currie, Not all that pricey if you don't get all the bells and whistles. Pricing is on their site www.currieenterprises.com
i have never bought a new complete 9" rear , but have bought axles, brakes and other parts from John's rear ends/9" factory. i think the guy is a jerk , but his stuff and prices were good. here is a link: http://www.9inchfactory.com/ i have also bought from Moser , hard to beat their service: http://www.moserengineering.com/
To some folks,me included, what Tinbender is looking for is a complete rear with a 300 gear and disc brakes,,,this is what I came up with on Curries site. Base Price: $949.95
3rd Member: $1186.30
Brakes: $459.95
Total Price: $2596.2That's pricy to me. Some of the late 1970 Lincoln Versailles came with factory rear disc and a 9 inch series Ford rear end. BUT ... I would suggest buying a used 8.8 Ford rear end out of a Explorer ... New enough to get parts ... and plenty of them in the salvage yards. Lot of them are POSI and in the 3.00 gear range. They are bring $250 or so in my area.
your right that price at first does seem high.but when you consider that the axle from currie will be built to your specs,as in it will fit your car.pinion and width like you want it...everything will be new except maybe the housing.they may be using new ones ...with a used axle you never know how it was treated and it may not fit just right.8.8 is a great axle but does not fit all cars.and after you rebuild everything it may not save that much......if you have the coin get the currie...ive built tons of used axles ,,but im setup to rebuild and narrow.....
Craigslist, sometimes you have to wait, lately seen a few from $350 (drum) up to $1,000 for disk. Width/ratio is the main issue, brakes can be brought anywhere.
Got to be a speed shop/ fabrication shop near you. I've done a ton of 9" rears and know the difference between what i can make and what currie sells. Just find somebody like me near you, any drag race ch***is shop can fix you right up with quality. Currie is bare bones minimum quality while you pay for high quality items.
check out the 9inch factory. (there really is a business called "the 9 inch factory". upon reading, it sounded completely snooty.)
I have run Currie stuff before (center sections but not a complete rear) with no problems. But, currently I am waiting for the center section of a complete new end to end 9" 31 spline posi rear end I got from them to come back for the third time. It howled like a son of a ***** the first two times. They are not returning phone calls from there dealer either. they have had it over a week and I will not get to use it to run to the show/swap this weekend. I have no expected date. Not sure if they are going down hill quick. They drug there feet on the first repair and I had to pay next day freight to make it before Power Tour. Really ****s to pay big bucks for freight to find out I got another junk one. We will see if they get it right the thrid time and I will report back.
I'd second that, the quality, level of work, and price was best from a local guy... It's good to have a one-on-one relationship when you're talking about stuff priced that high, plus they have their reputation on the line, who's really gonna change any minds about a big name shop. I'd start out with a junkyard unit as a core and go from there, 3.00 and 3.25's are common as dirt... If you absolutely need disc brakes I'd use aftermarket brakes on the 9", the Lincolns didn't have floating calipers, and I hated my Explorer's rear end when it was in my Explorer.
first i would figure out what width i need, then drum or disc.there is a list of all 9" rearends(makes/models/years) on google, then hit the junkyards.chances are you can have a late model rearend at a good price.
Currie quit using used 9" housings a few years ago when prices went up, quality went down and they got harder to find.
Thanks for the info guys. I'll start checking local. No junk yard / used for this build. Everyone I've talked to tells me by the time I have everything rebuilt, I'll be pretty deep into it anyway. This is a turn key build, money is not a huge problem, but the guy isn't rich either. I'm going new on everything possible. Last thing I want is to make this take any longer than I have to. I was hoping to keep it around 1500 to 1800.
Tinbender the 9" Factory is a great group of people to deal with I have used 7 or 8 of their rears as for the disc brake kit Ford Motorsports sells a rear disc kit for around 400 complete with parking brake option. RED
