    Guys,

    Can anyone decode this ?
    R10E-IA W.G.DIV.

Thats on the OD case so it has to be an OD unit casting number.

    What about this one ?
    1A-7222

Its supposed to be a 51 Merc 3 speed with Overdrive transmission.
Im looking for OD parts for it and want to be sure its what I think it is.

BTW: Any advice on where to get all OD parts for this tranny ?

    Thanks for any help.

I bought a booklet called "The Overdrive" on ebay. Regarding Warner Gear Division, Borg-Warner Corp. Muncie Indiana. According to this the post-war O/D trannies were Warner R-10 and R-11 which worked on most cars. It says the parts are similar if not identical. I have just looked through the booklet, it seems informative enough to fix an o/d unit but don't list the parts by number. If you want a copy send me your address and a couple bucks for postage and I will get it copied for you. You might just google warner gear or borg warner and maybe you can contact them for parts info. good luck and let us know if you find a source.

Try this place the guy (Randy) seems to know his stuff and has parts for overdrives. He's rebuilding my overdrive solenoid hopefully as I write.

That is the R10 overdrive unit by Warner Gear added to many manufacturer's three speed transmissions in the 30s to the '60s...Ford, Chevrolet, etc. Most of the overdrive parts are the same and should be available at a good antique Ford parts supplier, and through publications like Hemmings etc. Good luck, Frank

I forgot to mention this but if you google Borg Warner Overdrive you will find a wealth of information. I downloaded the repair manual which is a very large amount of information. I would be glad to email it to you if like but it takes up over 5MB of space. If you want it send me your email address.

Merc main tranny changed from 50 to 51 models. 49 & 50 had the large bellhousing on the main tranny 51 had the smaller bolt pattern similar to later models. R-10 casting numbers on OD case are supposed to be all the same for all models except for main drive gear according to Borg Warner tech so the OD housing & internals, except main shaft, may work on either od with the different main cases.

The R10 is Warner Gear's basic number on any of the regular duty overdrives they sold to Ford, Chrysler/Plymouth, Study, etc. Virtually all internal parts (except the output shaft and the gearbox mainshaft) are the same. The external OD housing that shows the R10 number is usually unique to the auto mfr so the rear mount works with their chassis.

The 1A-7222 is the Ford number for the side cover/shifter housing on the three speed portion of the tranny. Ford used this from 1951-54 on the Ford and Merc. It also indicates that the innards are 51-54 variety.

We stock pretty much all of the three speed part of that unit, plus I carry a limited selection of new and used parts for the overdrive section. Bearings, seals, and gaskets are in stock all the time.

They are selling on epay and the big parts houses at $10-$15 each - so spread the word and feel the joy of getting a piece of big business.
