Well I have two 283's and I have a question about the harmonic balancers. On one motor, it has a regular looking balancer (smaller than 350s and what not, but still looks the same). The other just looks like about 4.5"-5" diameter by probably 1/2"-3/4" thick. It has the holes to mount the crank pulley and a timing mark. Never seen anything like it though. Any help would be appreciated.
The Bigger one is from a Newer Motor. Got Changed along the way. Some Newer Small Block. The 283 was not born with that one on there.
The numbers say both are 283s. The larger one is out of a later model 283 and the smaller is an older model 283. I just didn't know what the significance was. The bigger balancer is still small (like 6.75") the other is just tiny and doesn't even look like a harmonic balancer.
none right now, i'll post them later if i have the time. but i am pretty much certain the larger balancer IS a 283 balancer. I just don't know what the smaller one is?
Don't forget the search engine. There have been a hundred threads about 283 balancers. here is one : http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=189572&highlight=283+balancer and another http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=337375&highlight=283+harmonic+balancer
take a look at the 2nd thread that tudor posted a link to.....especially the picture in post # 2 . that is what i consider a 283 balancer. post # 3 is what you have http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=337375&highlight=283+harmonic+balancer
That looks like the 4 cyl Chevy II hub, thats all they had no balancer just the hub. Dimensionaly they will fit a V-8 .
Okay thanks guys. From what I' getting out of those other threads, the early 283's just had a hub and no balancer and the later models did have a balancer. So I can either run the hub or drill and tap the crank for the newer style 283 balancer I have, correct?
OK, The VERY early 265 and 283 engines had NO balancer..Just the hub. Late 57 or early 58 they started using a dampner that looked like an afterthought. It looked as if they just riveted something to the hub.. The next generation dampner was a small version of the common dampner that we are familiar with. Any of the choices will work on a 283, BUT if you want your engine to have a long and healty life.. Use the newer style dampner..And please , drill the crank for the retaining bolt.. It really makes a mess when the dampner and crank part company !! (Ask me how i know ! ) LOL ! Dave
Alright thanks. I have a dampener (6.75" or whatever it is) off of a 1967 283. I'll drill and tap this crank and use the newer dampener. Sound good?
Yes, sounds good.. BTW, the early engine had a steel crank. The 67 almost certainly has a cast crank, with bigger counterweights. That is why GM used a bigger dampner. Still zero balance. Your early engine will thank you ! Dave
