Gunna do a 5 speed in a 53 AD truck. It will be behind a mildly hopped up 305. I know I need a world class, but does it really matter if its a "chevy" or "ford" one. i.e. does the chevy bell housing bolt on to either tranny?
Also does anyone know the measurements from the front of the tranny to the shifter for both?

    Thanks.

only with an adapter. there are two different cases, and newer s10s (2.2L) actually used a ford pattern iirc. There is a nice write up on inliners.org about a wc camaro t5/s10 tailhousing swap.

Bolt pattern on Ford T5 is completely different from GM T5.

Is that true? I was thinking the front of the tranny was the same and the bell housing that bolts to the tranny was the place where things were different. I know the tail shaft is different and the location of the shiifter was available in 3 different locations on T5 transmissions. Probably is different as the chevy T5 has a different shifter location than the ford version, so the case is probably totally different.

Too bad.. I know the ford version inside out! I've rebuild a bunch of them.

Are they hard to rebuild? Never done a manual tranny. Built a few engines.

they are not hard to build, my T-5 screamed in every gear but 4th so I tore it down, it needed a counter shaft and I replaced all the bearings , I think total cost was $220.00 for everything, and it works perfectly my nail head loves the overdrive

Check the tech link in my sig. Easiest way to do this behind a 305 is a bellhousing for any old SBC 4-spd & a T5 from a V8 Camaro or Firebird.

But there's more than one way to skin this cat...

That's a pretty incomplete list, but it's reasonably accurate for what it does list.

G-Force Transmissions are very popular in the mustang drag racing world. They can handle various levels of power based on your needs, and I'm sure they could tailor a bellhousing to your motor. They specialize in bulletproofing T-5's. http://www.gforcetransmissions.com/

Is a WC tranny that was behind a v6 car going to hold up the same as a WC that was made for a v8? Are there differences in WC t5s? (besides gear ratio)

Do a search on the HAMB. There is a thread on here that has more info than you can imagine. I'll post a link later if I find it.

I searched a bunch before posting and read most all that I found, flat ernie's page is the best so far. I was just hoping someone would have a quick answer on the v6/v8 thing.

My father in law has a Non W/C from a 4 cyl (I think it was a 2.5L) behind a mostly stock 305. So far it hasn't blown up, but he treats it pretty good. He does get on it every now and then. It's probably only a matter of time before it's done.

The thread I was talking about was Flat Ernie. If I remember correctly, the 4.3 v-6 and the v-8 use the same bell housing. I think most of the info you need is in his thread.

It depends. The gear ratio plays a part in the strength. In general, all else being equal, a high 1st gear ratio (lower numerically) is stronger than a lower 1st gear ratio.

But you won't find ratings for each and every T5 anyway...

Ratio differences not withstanding, the difference in the WC and non-WC is in the bearings and synchros, which are the same on the WC version of V6 and V8.
