    Hey,
So here is the deal. Living in Canda sometimes ****s. We of course need to run two licence plates on a car (front and back) I did up my car and have been just stuffing the plate in the front window and then last night of course Johnny Law pulls me over in town and tells me he can't see the plate in the window and I need to get it down in front of the car. I thouught this was something that could wait until later but I have to get it mounted or he said I would be getting a ticket next time he saw it without a visible plate. So I am throwing it out to you guys who are in the states and need to run front plates on 55 chevies without bumpers. Or to some who may have an idea where I should run the front plate on the 55. Of course the front bumper is not an option because there is no front bumper annd there never will be one. Thanks Guys!

Mount hinges on the bottom of the splash apron and the tag to the hinges. Use a PTO cable or the like attached to an edge of the plate or a bracket mounted slighly above and center. Cable extended the plate is in veiw, pulled and it's outta site like GOD intended.
    Nice 55 by the way.

If it has to be run, put a bar between the framerails ( right at the front where the hole's are) and mount it to that, or, just a simple bracket under the splash pan.
It's a law here too, but there's a couple i don't run plates on, like my truck. I could get stopped and ticketed, but so far i havn't. If i did i'd pay the fine. I don't like the way they look..Dumb yes, but i never said i was smart so...:)

    Very slick looking 55 too!

I know it sounds kinda streetrod-ish but what about a license plate frame that swings down and is visable when the key is turned on. When the power is turned off the license plate swings back up under out of site. Dad had one of the back of his bumperless '37 Ford convertible.

Will it fit behind the grill without blocking airflow?

Good idea, Denise. They are vacuum controled and can even be disconnected for racing.

Tuck it up underneath the splash panel since you don't have a spreader bar. You could also lean it back some to create an air deflector for your radiator too. If you can provide me with a good head on shot of your car with the license plate head on off to the side I could photoshop it in a few places for you later this week - pm me.

Same here in Washington State. The laws also say you have to have a front/rear bumper. I'm sure it's the same where you are. Why would they h***le you for the plate and not lack of a bumper? I know, but won't print it here. Butch/56sedandelivery.

Good ideas so far. I don't know why they didn't question me on the bumper. If they had I would have said that this particular showroom model never came with a bumper! lololol

Last year I put a front sway bar on my 55 and hid the plate in the center of the bar bolted to a pair of old Harley muffler clamps. You can still see it but it's under the front end

I like the idea of using the "street rodderish" vacuum operated swing down mechanism just under the front splash pan. Then I would run a control to it so it could be operated at will from inside of the car. Then of course, I would mostly "forget" to lower it when parking/driving.

Or better yet, just lower it as you are wheeling to a stop if you get pulled over. That should baffle the cops for awhile...

I'd call his bluff and let him pull me over again next time he sees it with no plate. If you get a ticket for that in Texas, all you have to do is take a picture of the car with a front plate, and take it to court. It gets dismissed with a $10 court fee. Repeat as necessary. Kind of a h***le, and I don't know about the laws in Canada, but I don't think I could put a front plate on that *****in '55.

I attached mine to the grille with long strips of velcro I just put a frame around the plate and bolted through the velcro strips at the top and bottom, slid the strips through the egg crate grille and stuck the strips together. easy off and on. Carlg

And we don't even need ac up in the high country

  24. Just mount it up under the splash pan.
I've been driving my truck here for 4 years with the front plate on the cab floor. Have not been stopped yet.
My friends that are cops and go to the shows and cruise nites with me just laugh about it. I'm just sayin' I've got a front licence bracket on back order.

i got pulled over a few times with it in the front window, but then i took it off all together, broke a bracket i had laying around then put both in my trunk in case i got rolled on so i could say i got backed into and it broke yadayada

Well when i took it off, i never got ****ed with again, for 3 years till i sold that car.
It seams that in the window they notice its not where it is suppose to be, but missing all together doesn't trigger any response

I'd put it on a hinge under the splash pan with a cable operating it. Let him stop you then when he's halfway to the car, lower it. Give him the ole..it IS on there! Neat car BTW.:D
