The little lady and I are spending next week in Destin. Any cool stuff close for a car guy to dig while I'm there? I will get tired of the tourist stuff very quickly. I may trek to Garlits museum if I get a chance. Thanks Brad

So you're saying its not an option but a must see? according to mapquest its a 5 hour drive from Destin to Ocala. Is that accurate? Brad

Destin fared pretty well during Ivan. I'll be there in a little over a week as well - not a lot of car stuff. There is an antique museum in Tallah***ee (2-2.5hrs) - I've never been, so don't know if it's worth the drive - I go to Tally for other reasons (family & Seminoles!).

Garlits is awesome & a must-see, but it's a fair trek from Destin. You're looking at an easy 5-6hr journey. It's near Ocala last exit going south on I-75 (used to be exit 67 I think, but they've renumbered them). You can see it from the road.

Yep, it's pretty cool. They have some really neat cars. When I got married in 2001, we had our reception there...was really cool, but they kept the museum part pretty much closed during the event, so no tours for the guests unless we wanted to shell out additional bucks...

If you do come to Tallah***ee and need anything, let me know!

Flat Ernie is right, it's a long ride to the Garlits Museum from Destin. If both of you guys get bored to death, impossible if you hang out at the Hog's Breath, go over to Fort Walton Beach and shoot the **** with Steve Maksymyk @ Maksymyk's Performance and Driveshaft Unlimited, 701 Denton Blvd., 862-0821. He's my best friend and the only guy in the panhandle that can fabricate "anything", he's got a bad *** 67 Nova and a mul***ude of trick stuff, including a couple of Harleys. He's a great guy and the best engine builder that I know, tell him John Copeland sent you over to talk cars. I went to Fort Walton when I returned from Viet Nam in 1970 and left for Ohio in 1983. NW Florida doesn't have a lot of car related activity, Steve can tell you what's happening. There is a new 1/8 mile drag strip North of FWB, in Holt I believe, don't know when they run.

The Holt strip is pretty active - it's just north of I-10 up off of Hwy87. I lived in FWB area (actually out west in Navarre - Ivan wasn't quite as nice out there) for 4yrs - will eventually end up back there.

Hogs Breath is better than no breath!

They closed Sammys & the Green Frog though!

So, how do you pronounce your buddie's name? mack-sim-ick? I think I've driven by his shop before...

    Flat Ernie,
That's exactly how you pronounce Steve's name, great guy. I have a 40 coupe like yours and I think we spoke in the past about me flying Spectre Gunships out of Duke Field for 12 years. And your right, better then no breath at all. I remember when the Hog's Breath was still on the island.

Is there anything left to cruise? I also think it's going to take longer than 45 min...I'll find out, I'm flying into Pensacola (FWB was $350 more & Panama City was $200 more) & driving to San Destin (all the hotels on Okaloosa island are unusable right now)

John - you bet! Did I mention my SNCO at my last job was a H-model sensor - Steve Rockovich. He always had cool video clips [IMG]
