Can't find right size 9 in rear for my 40 Ford so I am thinking about buying a 9 in Ford , 31 spline pick up rear and getting it narrowed and axles resplined to fit. Never had it done and am wondering what narrowing and resplining costs these days. I am in south FL. Any feedback appreciated. Thanks.
Check out moser, strange, or currie. They all list prices on their sites but you're looking at a good 350 plus shipping both ways... What width do you need?
Moser did my 8.8. I am completely satisfied. They are very professional plus the office chick has great hooters!
Jim, what size do you need? there are several companies out there that'll build you what ever you want. Going into your '40, don't limit yourself to the 31 spline either.
I usually get about $80 to cut the housing and weld the ends back on. If you need new ends they run around $70 extra depending on the source. I am a Strange dealer so I usually get new axles from them but the Moser re-spline deal is also a good option depending on which axles you have and how much you need to shorten them--some versions neck down and don't have enough material for a re-spline. 31 spline axles are great to cut and respline to 28. alot of 31 spline axles are undercut a few inches just past the splines. so if you're wanting to shorten them a few inches, your new length might just fall in the area that is too small to respline to 31, but ok to go to 28. a local welder narrowed a housing for me for 40 bucks. it's pretty simple to do with the narrowing jig to ensure the ends go back on straight. he recommended moser for the axles.
If you don't nned to narrow it a lot there is an easy way to go about 4" on a truck axle. I took of the long side tube at the gear houising and shortened the tube 4", put it back in the housing and tacked it together. If you have access to another 9" you can then take the axle from the short side and use it, since they are 4" shorter. I sent mine to Moser to be shortened and they were reasonable and fast. I took the tacked together housing to a guy that has a jig and had him finish weld the tube back on and makesure it was straight.
Moser is terriffic to work with. Hell, they even redid my axles for free after I was the one who measured them wrong! Top that for service!
One more vote for Moser. They have shortened and resplined about 30 sets of axles for us over the years and I'm continually amazed at the turnaround time they are able to perform. If you do send the axles to Moser have them replace the bearings as they will do that for a fraction of the local price of parts and labor. One more thing, if you need the bolt pattern changed they also do that along with truing the axle flange, insuring your wheels will track true. Frank
Moser for sure....i narrow my own housings......have Moser respline...110 a pair...fast turn around....AAA in my book....
Do some price checking. I've seen a few deals where you can buy a narrowed housing to your spec cheaper than having yours done if you add the frieght cost to send yours out.
