Since I can't drive the 63 Max Wedge Car around everyday.I finally decided to make some changes to my 62 Polara 500, I mean "The Wifes" 62 that is.Before I bought this car they rebuilt a 69 Roadrunner 383 with "906" 440 heads,"484" Purple Cam,10.0:1 comp. The Original HIPO 361 resides in my garage. The car was a total dog in the low end with 2.76:1 non posi rear axle,And stock distributor, stock exhaust.Last Week I decided to pull the 2.76 center section and install the "489" 3.91 Sure Grip center section and axles I pulled out of my 63.On the test drive I noticed a vast improvement with the 3.91's but the advance curve in the stock Distributor wasnt cutting it and the a freeze plug on the drivers side head started leaking. So I decided it was a good time to make some improvements after owning the car for a over a year now.The first thing I bought was a new Edelbrock RPM Intake to replace the Mopar Performance low rise dual plane intake. And a Mallory Unilite mechanical advance distributor. The mechanical advance on these distributors are 24 degrees in by 3,000 RPM.I'm hoping this will be enough, no matter what it will be an improvement over the stock unit.I already have a brand new Edelbrock 750 CFM manual Choke carb, so I'm using it...for now anyway.I know the Edelbrock 750's are plagued with issues annd not one of my favorite carbs. So Far the Intake is bolted up with carb, but now need to go to Vic Hubbards to get a Lokar Throttle Cable since the stock cable isnt long enough because of the extra height on the RPM Intake.Distributor is in as well.I ordered a pair of shorty headers that will be here soon and a new pair of polished "no name" Aluminum Valve Covers.I should have the car running today, minus the headers and new valve covers.A couple of weeks back I had two Flowmaster mufflers installed but using the 2 1/4" exhaust. When the headers get here all new 2 1/2" exhaust will be installed.A little more converter would be nice, but the push****on 727's are different from the 66 and later.A converter can be made or modify the transmission to use 66 and up converters, both are costly. For a street machine the stock converter should be good enough..if there is such a thing? I'll keep you posted and maybe film a video!
Cool car man.....those ugly old Mopars are really neat.... Psstt......most all '68-'70 383's-440's had "906" heads, regardless of if they were Magnums/Commando's or not.....
Hey,hey, watch that "ugly Mopar" stuff,pal...JK. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, right? MWHnut,I'll be watching this thread closely;wasn't aware of the converter issues on pre-66 Torqueflites. The car I'd like to score may still have the push-****on setup(Which I'd retain if possible);because I wasn't in a position to talk seriously about it,I didn't scope it out that well for a floor-shift setup. Good luck!
Hey man...I LOVE the UGLY DUCKLING Mopars, especially when equipped with Max Wedges and kickin' all the "pretty" cars ***es............
Yep that single plane manifold will help to make it a pig coming out of the hole, just change the front pump and drum to the later one and run a magnum converter (the one with the 1" space between the edge of the flywheel to top of converter)about 2400 rpm.
DONE! I finally finished all the performance mods to my 62 Dodge. The last thing to be done was the headers and 2.5" exhaust.Last week I installed the 3.91 Sure Grip.It runs alot better! I could still use a 2500 RPM Stall Converter.
Just don't go too uts on that modern aftermarket stuff... I think it ruins the flavor of the original car... IMHO!
If you feel you youd like more down low plug the vacuum advance & look for 38 degrees at 2500 rpm if you want even more advance the cam 4 degrees both you and the wife would probably like a 2800 stall but then again a dynamic 9 ½ unit would totally back up the cars looks
