I wondered if anyone could tell me anything about this? I just picked it up cause I thought it looked cool. I have no information about it other than what it says on the front.
It says "R.F. JAYNES Battery Inspector"

After consulting my crystal ball AND the label on the front, I would say that it is a battery tester..........

I agree. Looks like a battery tester. Does it have heating coils inside like a toaster or hair drier to put a load on the battery?

Here are a couple pics inside.
I am curious as to the age of this thing and how common(or not) they were at the time.

I never thought of it like that. That's very amusing.

Most garages had something like that, and you can still buy the modren equivlant. HF sells one that works the same. In the one pic you can see the carbon plates that provided the load. SUN equip made a lots of them,I've had several.

They must have left it behind when they bombed Pearl Harbor.

First pic is the carbon pile , that was mentioned before. The second pic is the current shunt. The Shunt is a precision high current low resistance resistor that measures voltage drop. A low voltage meter calibrated in amps read out current. Most testers like this are called VAT's Volt, Amp Testers. Nice old tester you have.

Thanks. I thought it would, if nothing else, make a cool garage ornament.

If it's built like most of that old timey electrical equipment, you can still use it and probably for another 50 years
