all self contained AC unit ???? WTF

I envision "plug & play" would actually be a 2 piece system, one being a replacement alternator with 2 outputs, one at 12v and a huge, higher voltage/amperage lug for the air conditioner. But that's ***uming technology stays on it's current path. You never really know what the world will discover tomorrow.......

 

We're about due for a revolutionary discover in physics....it's been oh, a hunnerd years since the last one.....

Then again, maybe this is as good as it gets.

 

Dont know if its what you are looking for, I believe I saw on the Vintage air web site that they now have a trunk mounted AC unit, not self contained tho. Was looking at their "new" MarkIV under dash unit they are reproducing. Good Luck!! Dave

 

I would bet that it would not be too diificult to do.
Most alternators now can put out enough amps to weld with if you wanted to.
It should have enough power to run an electric compressor?

Okay I might catch alot of **** for this and im not an A/C guy so be gentle- Couldnt you modify a small home A/C window unit for a car. You would have to find/Build an voltage inverter that would handle the compressor current, but if you mounted the condesor and compressor outside and the evap inside, wouldnt that work?

I understand its not ideal, but the smaller a/c units should be able to cool the inside of a car.. and you can get one for under $100.00.

Inverter, not generator...but I think that's the idea.

Really small window AC units are about 500 watts. That would be about 50 amps draw from your alternator to power it.

Okay I meant you would have to integrate it a little more....

If you got a big enough 12volt DC to 110 AC voltage inverter and tore the A/C unit apart and integrated it into the car instead of that monstosity I think its possible

 

You'd need a pretty powerful alternator to run it...but you can buy a used 1kw inverter on epay for about $50 and the ac unit for a bit over $100. Have fun!

 

It is a very early design. I admit there is room for improvement.

Move to Texas, it'll tax your ability to enjoy the car. Not that it can't be done (62 C10 sans AC, still gets driven), but it's going to be UNCOMFORTABLE!

 

Hey, I completely understand wanting AC in Texas, but I think I'd rather punch myself in the junk than move there. I was in Houston in late june and couldn't wait to get the hell outta there! I can't imagine August weather!

 

.....and did you notice, specs say 5000btu. That's less than half what is needed to cool a pickup truck, let alone a full sized car.

When my blower motor seems to be running warm, I turn on the defroster or heater and turn the fan on high..........I'd rathersweat some than melt down my 600 Horse 6-71 powered 421...........

I tried to play golf once. **** that!. I always though it was a good thing for those guys who have absolutely nothing to do. IMHO I'd rather be in the shop. But everybody has thier own thing.

when i first saw one of those "cold air guns" for milling i was amased that air could go in and hot out one way and cold out another i immediatly thought ,how could this be incorporated into a car? but then thought compressing air is terribly inefficient. the current method that is used is the most efficient thing that engineers can come up with for now small steps will progress as they come along

I hear ya'all, you youngin's, but as you get older, that AC will help that old man you are all destined to be, that I already am, with the hot August temps. I enjoy my Nash Hot Rod in the mornings and evenings without AC. But when it gets too hot for my old bones I climb into my custom '29 Chivvy truck with the winders up, and the blower a'blowin' that cold air!

 

You sir are a real hotrodder - the well-being of your engine is more important to you than mere personal comfort. I thought I was the only one that did this. My father taught me early that the heater core is a backup engine cooling system. My p***engers however hate the practice.
