I need some ideas for my '39 Ford Coupe. What did you do?

There is such a wide variety to choose from and its preference and personal choice so it will have to be your decision

  3. Keep it minimal,
    least number of dials.
Some might like to fill the place up with more little meters than a light aircraft,
but my vote is for just a speedo and a couple of warning lights,
say fuel level , oil pressure, and maybe turn signal.

keep it simple and don't bother with a whole load of gauges.

Minimalish in the Morris: the stock speedometer with built-in fuel gauge, and a tach in a pod under the dash. I'd like to do a cluster with tach, water temp, and oil pressure to replace the driver's side glove box door, with a combined face that matches the speedometer.

On the '31 I'd like a whole collection of gauges, varied, unusual, each considered, interspersed with equally diverse switchgear, stuff off houses and stoves, something like this:

    only more so.

I believe that our set will fit right in. 4-3/8" mounting hole.
The smaller 3-3/8" would need a spacer, so you might as well go bigger.

After running aftermarket gauges in my '40 for may years, I went back to the originals a couple years ago. They fit right, work well and look good and I think the same is true of the '39 gauges. The Mooneyes tach is in a pod on the dash and a guy could add a small SW oil pressure below to finish the set.

You could have originals re-screened and converted for 12 V.

    I recommend www.williamsons.com

If it's a hotrod I'd use old Stewart Warner's. If it's a street rod there are dozens of options including fish designs.:D JMO

Thanks for all of the replies. I was leaning towards the ones like Marks914 posted. They look close to the originals. I wonder if these will fit in my factory holes? I do not want to cut my dash. I agree with everyone so far that minimal is the best way to go. I do not want anything hanging under the dash. Thanks and keep the pictures coming.

Here is a mock up of my 39 with Moons. I like em , but they were ALOT more expensive than they were priced in the latest catalog.

When I say alot, I mean ALOT!!! I don't mind spending money if I have to, but holy ****, these things were pricy.

    Good luck, -Abone.

First picture; ****og SW in plywood. Speedo, Ammeter, Oil Pressure, Water Temp. Gas gauge is blocked out by the steering wheel.

Second picture, on my other car; SW Speedo and Gas Gauge. Red ones, Ammeter, Oil Pressure, Water Temp are JC Whitney.

I'd go with the green Dolphins. Make sure you get the older series with the fish jumping out of the water and not the newer ones with the name spelled out. Everyone I've talked to here on the HAMB thinks they are by far the greatest and most macho ones out there. If you don't believe me, do a search on here to find out. Gotta go now, bye, bye.;)

Oh don't be so mean:) ---In one car we used the original set of 51 buick guages. Just had them refurbished including the clock. But on my 28 chevy, I bought a set of new in the box auto meter guages at a swap meat for a real cheap price. So cheap that it was a no brainer for me to use them. I also was looking for a certain color, and that worked out also...John

Small gauges or an all in one style . Don't stick a ton of gauges in the dash . I really don't understand why people do that at all !
Really a Tach with oil & temp and you are on your way !

There are so many really good gauge set ups out there . Why not do what I am doing with my 37 Ply truck , take a cluster from a donor and make it different ! I got mine for $30 and looks great !
BE DIFFERENT , BE YOURSELF !

Yeah, not familiar with that make of speedometer either. That reverse rotation wings gauge certainly is a cool piece! Nice score.

As for the vacameter gauge?? Totally just silly. You don't need that thing. I think you should take if off and send it to me. I'll PM you my address. ;):D:p

I'm using the factory gauges in my Studebaker. It doesn't hurt that they were made by SW.
