'32 Ford with SBC. I know Walker is the favorite. What other brands have you had good luck with. Are the Ebay ones **** or ?? Thanks and I did search.
Walker get's my vote as well. Never had a single issue with heating in my old 32 with a blown sb..that's what i bought for my 32 project as well..
I currently have three 1932's with Walker radiators and I have one for the 54 wagon,, I've used Griffin and U.S.Radiator but I'll stick with Walker from now own. HRP
Forget the Ebay imports... nice price but when it leaks in two years who do you see for service... Chairman Mao?
Good Post. I'm going to have to buy one soon for a blown DeSoto, and am leaning toward an aluminum radiator. Any Pros/Cons aluminum vs. br***?...NOT to hijack the thread, but along the same lines...
First let me say I'm not a big fan of Vern Walker or the NSRA, and have listened to all the Aluminum vs Copper/br*** arguments. I live in Deep east <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comTexas and</ST1 we had 16 days in July over 100 degrees, and quite a few over 105. Plus high humidity. I have had AFCO, CAR (Custom Auto Radiator) Griffin and Ron Davis. All of which were the "Max Cool" designs. When I re did my Roadster two years ago, removed a perfectly good Griffin and bought a "Z Line" Walker. When I started on the current project, a 32 Phaeton, the first item I bought was a "Z Line" Walker. That is what will go on the coupe when I can afford it, and on any Future projects. I did find it interesting that when the price of copper went through the roof Walker went up, but when it fell back Radiator prices stayed the same. Must be kin to gasoline somehow. All that said, IF you get a Walker and it needs repair sometime, call Walker, they are real good about repairs, and I have found that most local shops, even one's that still have old guys working in them don't understand Walker's construction techniques, and although they will attempt a repair, it won't hold. I'll shut up now and everyone can cut my opinions to ribbons.
When Griffin Radiator was in Townville,South Carolina they were known for racing raditors and were less than 5 miles from my home,, I stopped in one day and talked to Buddy Griffin and told him I would like to have a aluminum radiator for my 39 Ford convertable and he told me he didn't have a pattern but If I brought him my old radiator he would make me one,,, A week later I had the 1st aluminum 39/40 hot rod radiator,,a thing of beauty and it never kept the car cool as I thought,,I even drove up to the shop and one of the Griffin employees rode around with me and saw I wasn't doing the job. He suggested I pull it out and bring it back,,I did that afternoon and he said lets see what the problem is,,and with that he ran it thru the big bandsaw near the bottom of the cooling tubes,,, Just as I thought,,he said,,over half the cooling fin tubes were cloged with the epoxy they were using at that time. 2 Days later I had a new radiator and the car never ran hot again,,not even in Piegon Forge bumper to bumper traffic. I would say they stand behind their work,,, I prefer a copper and br*** radiator and if you develope a leak out on the road away from home almost any radiator shop can make the needed repairs and have you back up and running in a couple of hours ,that is not always an option with aluminum.
