Is this worth Buying??? Ford truck with Olds engine

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Chris, Aug 10, 2009.

  1. I found this truck today, quite surprised to see whats under the hood. The owner does not know the size of the engine, but pretty sure it's a 324. I could not read the block numbers, but the head has a #3 on the center port.
The main reason I want this truck is it has the stock truck 4 speed, that means the engine would have a standard flywheel...something I need. Along with that it has a Olds-to-Ford adapter plate and also apears to have an oil filter relocator.

The old man wants 800.00 for the truck. That is too much for me to spend on a flywheel and such, even though they are rare I don't think worth that. The engine apears to be stuck, may be good only as a core. Is there any value to anything else here you Olds guys see? I don't think much of the truck is of value except maybe the hood and grill.

    Thanks!

    see if he'll take 500.

Lots of weight in scrap there.

  3. He's quie firm at 800.00, he is dead-set on thinking it'll run and drive and be a good work truck with gas and a battery...it was parked in 1972!
Scrap is pretty worthless right now, too.

i wouldn't pay $800 for it personally, but that's just me. it could very well be worth it to someone, just not to me. i think the guy is a little silly if he thinks it will be a driver with a battery and such.
    either way, bitchin truck.
not like you have a shortage of cool shit/projects.

  6. Yeah, I don't want the truck at all. The body is aluminum and nice, but I mainly want is the flywheel/engine and such. If I had the room, I'd turn it into and engine storage unit...:D

Somebody save this! A full race roadster on a tow bar behind it WOW!
I think 800 $ is fare as long as it goes to someone who won't scrap it come on this cool shit is only here once.
Somone find a cheaper flywheel for Chris!
I think 800 and destroying a complete piece of history is a little steep. Keep looking. Post more want ads. Someone help!!
Just spent the weekend in a rain filled tent. This would make a bitchin camper.

I have about 10 flywheels for flatheads, don't know which is which but if you PM me the details on the "standard" flywheel you need I might have it.

Way too cool to tear up or scrap. Wish I were closer, I'd love to have that truck.

Looks like a cool camper to me! Have you found any Olds flywheels lately? They're like hens teeth. Last one I saw was $800

    think olds flywheel.

  13. This has an Olds engine, not a flathead.

  14. Are they really worth that much?? I thought like 3-400.00. I know they are hard to find, bt didn't think that hard :D

  15. Chris,
I'm a little closer to retirement than you so let me give you a little different perspective. it would make on hell of a camper.

I can just see me tooling down the road in my vintage homade motor with the altered in tow.

I'm guessing that you have no plce to keep it but you should make your 8 bills back easily and keep the parts you want.

  16. Hey Chris, that would be one cool support rig for the Eastside for the run next year. East Vs West run ! I could see something cool painted on the sides. Hmm $800, if you could get for $500 that would be better yet ! You may be able to sell off the rest and if you only want the flywheel and trans, and some other goodies.

  17. Buy it,,pull the engine and tranny and sell the truck,,,somebody here would love to have the truck. HRP

  18. I thought of that, if I had a running 8BA I would be tempted :D

Not previously mentioned but someone might buy just the front sheet metal since it looks pretty nice! Personally I think it would make a cool camper/pit truck so rip out the engine and trans take what you need and sell the rest to get some dough back.

  20. The girlfriend DOES NOT dig it. And you are correct, I have no place for it. I was thinking it would be rad to pull the nose and make an engine/tranny,axle storage unit out of it. It appears to be water tight, but again I got nowere to stick it.

But if you guys think I could pass the ol engine-less girl on, maybe it's worth a shot to get what I need and make some money back.

Dude that our cash cow for next year's Speedweek. "Swell Time Ice Cream" live on the Salt next year. We just need to rig it with generators and freezers to keep shit cold and I'm sure the 324 will do a geat job!!!

Get paid to go to Bonneville?? Sounds like money and good times in the bank!!! The "Red Fox" would be down to work it.

  23. Get it and pull the motor, that thing needs a big block and an automatic anyway, Ohh; and AC, and a generator, and a fridge, and,,,,,,,,,,,,,

  24. cris, send denise over with $500 and some of her cookies! if the cookies don't seal the deal her smile will!:D nothing ventured nothing gained.

I'm new to the board but I can see lots of posibilities here. If I were you I'd buy it, take what you want and sell the rest as a project. Just form the replies you've seen here there seems to be interest in it. Tub it , drop a big block Ford in it for that ProStreet look. I can see it as a rat rod project too. Camper option would be cool to. Just look at those big side panels just screaming for paint and pinstripes. Lots of work but could be worth it. It would be great if someone here bought it and sent out update on what it was being transformed in to.

Have you called Weber? If I recall, I was pretty shocked on all the different flywheels they offered.

Make a small investment: bring a fresh battery and a can of gas. Then offer him $500?

  28. Engine is locked up, I proved that to him already. He's pretty stubborn. "It was running just a couple years ago"...you know how it goes. I have no problem paying him if I thought I could get at least half my money back. Sounds like maybe I could by your guys replies. Thanks a lot!

Something I would probably do, but never seem to get as much as I think for the parts I don't want. I would say go with you gut but that usually gets me in trouble.
