Do it your way, because there's always going to be something!

  2. Georgia Dawg, I lost my dad three years ago at the age of 89, Iam 46, and I would say that last lesson as a father he taught me was be HAPPY!
If that truck makes you happy and being in it brings back all those memories that is all that matters , period.
People will always judge others by their own standards not yours ,don't let them influence anything you do. Iam sure your father would happy to know you are thinking about him because every time you do a little work on that truck , he will be helping your very hands.
My dad and I were not overly close but I do know he loved and respected me . How you might ask? He gave me the greatest gift of all his raw talent to see and build things with precious dam little, every time I build something with my hands I think of him.
The father son bond is something one can only truly appreciate after they are gone , kind of bitter sweet but great just the same.Thats my two cents worth so be happy and enjoy the truck and the memories . Rob

If you're aching for another cruise, bring it on over to Canton this weekend. It's probably less then 45 min from Cartersville. I'm going to try to be there this time.

I'm building my 53 Buick with the 350/350 and a Camaro rear end. I'm building it for me. For anyone who "hates" it, they can kiss the spot that puckers but doesn't smile!

  6. Not trying to sway your decision, but have you seen these? You can have the power windows AND the OEM crank handles....

    Scroll to the bottom.

Great story, by the way. My father was also an auto trimmer, as am I.

Nothing I own is 100% "hamb friendly" each one breaks the tradition in some way - Sorry it just never mattered to me. The Hamb is a great place, but liek anything it can be (and often is) taken a bit too seriously. You've got the right idea - I wouldn't put down your truck either way - but sharing that story is even better. Cool story - cool truck - keep 'em both alive!!!!

While the HAMB certainly has changed what I want from a car, I will build the car I want,,,,, I won't "flaunt" my non HAMB friendly stuff or "seek acceptance" on this board for the non HAMB friendly aspects of my cars because that really ain't polite.

But I will build the car I want, if someone does not like it "so what"....

To the greatest extent, I don't really care if people outside of my family like me or don't like me for things I do on don't do...

But back to my first point, my builds will be more traditional because of the HAMB.

The best advise anyone can ever give you is this. It's your car. Do what makes YOU happy. There are no rules. Everyone has a different view on what their car or truck should look like. The only person you have to please is yourself and or the wife. Nobody else matters. If you love your car then you've succeeded.

Great post Georgiadawg that should make a lot of guys wake up and remember what is really important in the world.

Being one of the older guys who can understand wanting a few of the creature comforts in my ride that I and my wife did without for the past 41 years I can well understand the mods your dad made on the truck.

I wouldn't get too excited about the overly vocal "haters"
Few of them actually know why they hate certain automotive things except they hope it makes them one of the "cool guys" if they profess to hate things like 350 small blocks and independent front end swaps.

Sometimes you wonder if in 1947 or 48 a lot of guys professed to hate Flathead Ford V8's because they were too common and too easy to hop up an anyone could own and work on one. Surely the guys with Inline sixes or Flathead Cads must have given the Ford guys with their 40 engines with Merc Cranks a ration of **** because they had those belly****on engines instead of a "cool" engine.

Drive the truck and enjoy it just the way it is and take time to remember your dad every time you do. Being able to have great memories of our dads is something special in it's self an not something that everyone has the privilege to have. And having his truck that evolved through the years as his needs changed is something in it's self.

I liked your story. I understand why you want to keep the truck mostly the way your dad had it. Please stop worrying about what bystanders say about your truck. Most of them don't do their own work, don't know a wrench from a hole in the ground, and think loud obnoxious criticism of somebody elses car will gain them acceptence with the "cool" people they are trying to impress.

the idea of building a car, custom, suited only to the builder himself, is what I thought the HAMB was all about. although i do agree that there are many people that will completely disregard something as non-traditional garbage if it does not fit in the generic comfort zone they are used to.

build what makes YOU happy, if people say things badly about it, ask them where their's is....most of the time they say, "well, i dont have one." thats when you should tell them, "you have a lot of ideas, you should build one."
