X2........ don't forget some barbed wire, burlap for the seats, iron crosses, nerf bars made our of old wrenches, cut a really nice steering wheel up, an air cleaner made out of a mailbox...........I'll be right back, I have to go vomit...............
remember, small cars with chopped tops are for midgets. if your anywhere near a hand close to 6' you'll be sorry!
I dont understand why people start bringing rat rods into the mix here. While i do think that he shouldnt chop the top off i dont belive he deseves the stupid comments of some people above, he was just asking an honest to god question. Remember the only stupid question is a question that wasnt asked...
Do what you want but that sign painters truck is awesome! I think with the chop you need the fenders.
Just remember Boyd Coddington got ***** slapped in a LA bar after taking the roof off a 1935 coupe to convert it into a roadster. Some folks take their old stuff very seriously.
Ok let me ask this, can i have a ragtop like a (vw) on a closed top. I wish i could just go buy brokes-ville roadster. This is what i have to work with, so I have to make it work for me. Funds are very limited but I want it to be cool. I got a deal on a hotrod it could been any hotrod but this 1929 belonged to a dear friend who has pasted and now it belongs to me. So I cant trade it. Why are there not that many closed cab pickup out there? If so can some direct me in the right direction as far as style. 1929
Before you make any choices (you've got time) hang out here and read. Go to the archives, do some searches, save all the pics and threads that inspire you and I'm sure you'll get an idea of what you'd like to do. What did your friend want to do with it?
Looks for Tyler's, Fltblk here on the HAMB, he has a cool Stude powered 30 pickup with a removable topskin, like the VW you reference. Very cool truck.
I dont know, he was in to lowriders. Maybe a LowRodder? He had a unforeseen stroke and pasted. We talked about his other cars but rarely about the 1929. He bought it when he was 13yrs he past at 70s he had the car almost 50yrs. So my thought is he probably would have done daytons on skinny white walls on flakes with pumps and inline 6 with gl*** pipes.
Well, I guess you have a pretty rounded out reply!!!!----I'm with the majority--Don't do it!!!---One thing NO ONE has mentioned---YET---When ever you cut the roof off, it will NEVER be a RPU, & you will have the doors with windows to contend with, & many other problems just mentioned!---NOW, the decision is YOURS!!--------Don
I like your idea of the sliding rag, that could be done pretty easily...3 ideas... 1. You could just make a removable top insert, it could be foldable too so you could store it behind the seat, or where ever... 2. There are quite a few companies that make sliding rag kits, just give them your dimensions and some cash... 3. You could build your own, som window track, a couple rollers for the front, a hand crank or a power slider...that wouldn't be to hard... Or you could do what I've always wanted to do... an A pick up, but with a top like a Sport Coupe (okay the sport coupes didn't fold down, but it would be similar) Leave the door tops like a Sport Coupe, or an A-400 or B-400, remove the rest of the steel (top, and upper cab back) and build a folding top...I think that would be sweet. I want to use a '30-'31 though...but it could work on a '28-'29..
definatly leave the roof as it is, those trucks are beutifull. Boyds crew built a nice one that was in R and C a while ago this is the best pic i could find. oops sorry guys
ThankX you guys, for the great advice and for negative comments. Little by lil i'm forming an idea. It would be a shame to cut off the roof, BUT i feel like it would look like a Frankenstein head. So maybe a mild chop and ragtop of some sort. 1929
who said anything about Rat rod? if you go back and re-read what i said. "this is my brother's so whatever he decides to do. i'll make sure that it comes out right." so that means that it will be done right not slapped together.
i say do not cut it..if you need a roadster pickup body a buddy of mine has all the sheetmetal to a 29 rpu and if you dont like his i know where another all complete one is that i have access to..id trade you i just dont want to see that roof go to waste..
Look at last month's R&C....I think it was last month. There was a bare metal A coupe featured that was in the Rodder's Journal as well that has a removeable center section in the roof kind of like what you are talking about. The removable section was fit into the area on A's that is normaly filled by the top insert it looked nice and clean.
This looks pretty good to me with the fenders. Maybe bed is a tad too bobbed for my tastes, but that is just my eye. I your idea of running a sliding rag top, 29. Could be very cool if done right.
here you go. sell your cab and buy this one.. its actually pretty cool the way it is, but I wouldnt cut a perfectly good cab either. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ford...1499QQptZUSQ5fCarsQ5fTrucksQQsalenotsupported
Dude that is the funniest thing ever. Did you read the ad?! It started life as a closed cab. But looks pretty good to me as a rpu..
Ok so Im not gonna chop the roof off like a roadster, BUT I wanna still customize it. So Im thinking of a mild chop and open ragtop type roof. I have posted some photo of my inspiration. Any ideas or suggestions?
All the hot rods in the pictures that you have posted sport severe chops. Are you sure you will be happy with a 2" or 3" chop? There are a bunch of ways that you can do your pickup, leave it tall and channel the heck out of it, run it hi-boy style on '32 rails, chop and channel it like the green one in your pix... Come up with a solid plan and stick to it! - Joe
