so ive been lookin for a 348 or 409 to build for a future project and havent had much look finding something worth building or that i could afford. so the other week i put an add on craigslist to see if i could find something... well a few weeks went bye and didnt hear from anybody and actually had forgotten about my listing... well today while sitting at work, the phone rings and an old guy claims he has a ton of 348 and 409 stuff. obviously i perk up and think ive hit the jackpot. well to make a long story short this guy didnt know his *** from a hole in the wall. he begins to tell me that he (2) 400 blocks that i could bore out to 409's and a couple of 350's that would be bigger than the 348 i was looking for and would be much better with the 2 barrel carb that is on it. at first i was pissed and just wanted to hang up on the guy, but it quickly became my afternoon excitement! all i could say was "wow"... sorry for my pointless story, but i just couldnt believe how the guy kept going after i had described to him what and how 348's and 409's were different from a sbc.
if it's close you should go and check out his stuff anyway. even though he doesn't know 348/409's , you never know what else he has laying around
I am on there all the time looking for good deals and have gotten many ! People really don't know what they have most of the time . I will tell you I always go to the York , Harrisburg , Lancaster , Baltimore MD . I remember seeing some 348 parts in the week or so but with in a week where someone had an ad for parts or an engine . I just remember he is in the York ad and lives in East Berlin ! I thought about looking at them but I am a Ford & Mopar guy so let it go . East Berlin is 5 minutes up the street from me , that's why I was thinking of checking them out . If you find the ad or I run across them I will let you know . Would be happy to check them out for you ! If you find the ad send me a PM . I will be on vacation from Thursday til Tuesday . RetroJim
There are guys who dig those 400 small blocks for whatever reason, if they were cheap enough, they might make good resale or swapping material. And who knows what could be laying around, like they said, the last time I went on one of those adventures I bought a 97 carb for like $20.
maybe hes jerkin' your chain to see if you will come out or not..If it isnt too far..i think it would be worth it.. who knows..when you get there you may find it really is a 348/409..and he just doesnt know
Yep, he just might have a few of those legendary chevy 301's only his are better because they were already out to 307's right from the factory
My dad p***ed up a 58 chevy corvair once turns out to be a corvette when he drove by the guys house turns out the guy had a speech impediment and couldnt say corvette and when my dad realized corvairs werent built until 60 it was to late and someone beat him to the vette hey **** happens but he learned a lesson now he always checks up on leads no matter how rediculous they may seem !
i found the ad and called the guy... 1965 complete truck motors that have been pulled and sitting for years. the guy has (2) and wants $1000 a piece
Last weekend at Bloomsburg Pa Car show. There was a guy who had 348 heads, valve covers etc. He wanted 125 for the pair. I think he had more stuff at home. PM me and leave me your name. If you are interested. I will see him again next month. I know he did not sell them. Not much traffic in our area.
exactly... he said his parents owned a yard and willed everything to him and his brother. he said he knew exactly what he had and how much they were worth! hey, more power to him if he could actually ****er someone into buying them for that price...
$1000 for a running 409 isn't bad provided the block isn't cracked. Good luck finding a 409 for any less than that; you be lucky to find a car block (bare block, nothing else) for less. The 409 truck blocks aren't "boat anchors" like their 348 truck counterparts. These aren't cheap engines to build. If you think $1000 is too much, stick to the SBCs.
