I've got one and it seems to hold up ok. I've had a 350 on it for the last 6 years.
But you know I got mine at Sams club for $45.
A $100 is alot of money for a stand.

If you've found a $100 dollar engine stand at Harbor freight it must be the best one they have. I've got a few of their cheap one's but just use them to keep engines off the floor. Their heavy duty ones aren't too bad, just like everything else they have, all built overseas as cheaply as possible.

this project is going to take while is why im asking. i dont wnat to come home and find the motor in the floor casue i bought a cheap stand. i found that stand on there web page. havent looke din the store yet. thanks

  6. Engine NOT motor hahahaah! I interchange the terms myself. Anyway, find a nice cheapie, works fine on a SBC, My 348 was a little scetchy. I would reccomend welding it together and gussetting the **** out of it if you had a heavier mill.

Pontiac 347 going on it. looks heavy!!!

  8. I would beef it up. Seriously, any kids around? My 348 was tipsy enough on the import stand that an eager 7 year old could have grabbed it and tipped it on him/her.

if you get a 4 wheel stand it should be stable enough, and you can weld and gusset if it wiggles too much for comfort.

I splurged and got a nice Mac stand years ago, even that 235 hangs nice on it.

Oh yeah, how much was it..?
I've noticed 235's don't look too safe on most stands....

I bought a Sam's club stand too. I used it for flatheads and SBC's but when it came time to put my 700 lb Hemi on a stand, I went to O'Reiley's where they were having a sale on Mr Goodwrench stands...cost $70 but held that fas *** hemi ok.
I sold the Sam's stand At the local swap meet for $20. The Pontiac is a little heavier than a SBC but lighter than a Big Block chevy. Complete engine is 590 lbs while a sbc is like 530 lbs.

I forget, probably a few hunnerd bucks, I had some extra $$$ at the time. That was 15 years ago, I'm sure the price has gone up!

I've got a few engine stands that'll I'll part with cheap. They're you basic garden variety cheapo. Great for a SBC or an aluminum V-6 but not much else. I also have one of the Heavy Duty $100 Northern Tools ones, merely sufficient for a 235 or Nailhead. The cheaper ones don't like either. I'll be getting one of the Matco MES8300 for my next stand. $260 and worth every penny... Matco MES8300

a good article on engine stand that are nice ... engien stand comparison

good tools are worth it. if you build more than an engine or two a year I think the extra cash is justified...
