If you can read this, thank a teacher, if you can read it in English thank a vet. Amen, buddy, amen. JK
my grandfather prolly served with them in the Army of Occupation in Japan... Grandad was in North Africa, Italy and got shipped to the Pacific theater after the surrender signing on the deck of the MO...
On VJ day 1945, My Father was the lieutenant of a recon platoon in the 2nd Marine division. He was slated to land near Sasebo (near Nagasaki) in the Spring of 1946, when the assault on the Southern Island of Japan was to begin, and was at VJ time busy with the staff work of plotting artillery concentrations on beach heads and such. The Northern Island was to be attacked in 1947...projections were for 400,000 American casualties, Japanese casualties in the millions. The Marines rebuilding their units after Okinawa and Iwo considered their chances of being alive in 1948 after serving as the points of two more invasions to be very, very low. All over Europe, the American, British, and Indian troops who had just survived their roles in the western theatre were reorganizing and re-equipping for transfer to the invasion...
My grandfather was also in the 2nd division, and brought home a Japanese rifle off of, or nearby Nagasaki. It had to be shipped home in a box because it was still radioactive. I have that rifle now. Semper Fi
Besides thanking a vet,be sure to thank all those who made the weapons of war at home in the US auto factories. And for sure thank the nerds that built a working nuclear bomb.
Sorry, I'm kind of a ship nut. I'm also from Arizona and this isn't completely off topic. After sinking, the USS Arizona was left where she sat, but a few parts of her were salvaged, mainly turrets 3 and 4, which were later installed as coastal defense guns. One (Battery Arizona) was on the western end of Oahu, which was never completed. The other (Battery Pennsylvania, named after Arizona's sister ship) was on east end on the Mokapu Peninsula. It was test fired on or around VJ day and scrapped shortly after. http://www.navsource.org/archives/01/013966b.jpg

My grandfather was with the 32nd Infantry Division, '42-'45, Saidor and Aitape, Drimunoir River on Aitape (where one of the largest banzai charges of the War occured, 10,000 Japanese attaked across the river en masse, ) Leyte and Luzon, ended the war chasing Yamashita up an down the Villa Verde Trail there, after being hit twice. I miss him alot.
How many of you can say your mother in law was actually a Marine? This is my wife's mother and father just after they were married 1943
It's just a shame that so many heroes never got a chance to celebrate it. Big salute to all the vets.
I just worked at a customers house.....he landed at Normandy on day 3 and went all the way to Germany....we had a great day talking to each other....one grunt to another....It was kind of rough for him to talk, but he did open up to another soldier......I have to admire the guys from WW2....when they went in they had NO idea when they were comeing home again........Thanks to all who served......stan....USMC 68-69

My pops was one of those bad luck guys that was in the USMC ready to get out when the war started and had to stay in. He did the big south pacific tour with the 5th Marines and thought things were done. Got to stay home long enough after WWII to help conceive my sister, me, and my brother THEN Korea started and he got RECALLED and did his time there. Miss him everyday. Photo of him getting ready to go after Christmas leave in 1941
I never tire of thanking our vets. For all you've done & all you will do, thank you for protecting & preserving our way of life in the greatest country in the world!
