I am building a T on A frame but building the frame using the Vern Tardel book. In it he mentions using 1948 and later F1/F100 pickup brakes (backing plates, shoes, drums, etc.) My question is what's the cutoff date for the F100 years. Does 1960 still work? Another question I have is a rather stupid question. I do not have any lug nuts for the 1940 rearend. It will be running wire wheels. Does it take a standard lug or do I need special lug nuts?

I can't answer your first question, but if your wire wheels are FORD, then the lugnuts are the same as fit the non-wire wheels

I've read that the hot ticket was the '53-'56 F100 front brakes. I'm not sure how far the interchange goes, the backing plates may be different. I know they recommend using '66 F-100 brake parts internally in them to gain self-adjusting brakes.

They work good, I'm using stock ones on my A-bone now.

As el Scotto says, they're refering to the '53-'56 F100.Post '56 backplates are different, possibly the hubs as well. Some internal parts and ,I believe drums can be used from certain later models though I'm not 100% on which ones.
The wheel nuts are standard 1/2 NF thread as used on many cars.

I have a set of those '56 front brakes, right down to the spindles, and they're different from the '39-'48 Fords. For one thing, they are 11" backing plates, which means you can not put Buick finned drums as they are 12" in diameter. The spindles are also very different as well.

Just depends what you want overall, I guess.

Those early Ford wires should fit either backing plate. But, the '40 rear will be an inch bigger if you use the '53-'56 on the fronts and '40s on the back.

The 53 / 56 F-100 brake setup is preferred IMHO. They are self engerzing ... and parts are available are NAPA and most of the other parts houses. I use the 66 F-100 springs and adjusters to get self adjusters. The drums and brake shoes will interchange from 53 to 66.

Like said, they are 11 inch in diameter SO ... no finned Buick drum conversions.

Go here to see how easy the 53/56 F-100 conversion is :D

You can use 48-52 f1 or 53-56 f100 front brakes and hubs on the earlier spindles. Bolt pattern is different than the earlier ones. I just had mine redrilled for the later ford lug pattern. On the 57 and later models the backing plates had a different bolt up pattern.
