BIG shops buy 10 to 20k in paint a month... if a paint company A wants a big shop, how else u gunna get paint company B system out? askin nicely? hahahaah. u guys are nieve if u think other wise.

Would not surprise me if the purchaser was getting a little payola on the side, but somewhere the shop is paying for the paint don't ya think?

its a big fat check when the body shop signs a contract for x many years to buy only that companies paint. its buisness. its not uncommon for it to be 100k plus. smaller shops will get less of course.

    think of it this way.......

ur buying paint company A's paint. say u buy 10k a month. u have to buy paint.. its inevitable. paint company B comes along offering to get you out of paint company A's contract, but the kicker is they will give u 100k to do this with a 5 year contract. either way ur buying paint, now u have 100k extra in ur pocket. paint between the highend compnies is close enuff to be comparable.

now company b gets that 10k a month for 5 years. it only cost them 100k to do it.

100k loss to make 600k over 5 years.. bad investment, when they werent getting the money before since company A had it?

    no

now of course, this is more on the extreme end. smaller shops wont get that. but its not uncommon.

i love hok, but they only have 3 single stage colors.

    red. white and black.

the red has to be cleared over. so there isnt a point in just calling it a ss.

My vote is for dupont but go with chromapremier S/S. Chromaone is an older formula and is a good refinish paint but the Premier stuff has a lot more depth and better flow out qualities.

I am in the business and it's common to make an "investment" in the shop. I have seen everything from checks, booths, frame racks, etc. Now it has scaled way back with the shrinking in the industry, the buzz word now is discounts. It's not uncommon for a paint jobber to not make money for 3 years at an account due to the "deal" that was written.

i have seen this as well.

yes, some shops do get paid off. m-2 group got sued by dupont and had to return 1 million in payoffs as they got caught buying from other suppliers. true story

in reality though, they are really getting a 10% loan , as they are obligated to buy everything related to the biz from this supplier for x amout of time, and dont get the industry standard of 10% on paint. most shops getting the big money wind up bk for whatever reasons.

i have seen buddies get boothes and frame racks as well from suppliers.

still, this doesnt mean the painter dont know what he's doing , or using.

i had all the paint co's in my shop offering free mixing racks , and the computer to go with it. i still went with the ppg stuff , cause i thought it was the best system at the time(still is) and told them i could use the old computer, instead got deeper discounts on 3m products, equipment, and retained the discount on the paint. also the supplier i use handels 3 or 4 systems, so i could have got any one from them.

for the record, most shops that have mixing racks, got them for free, thats how that works. in small places like mine, you are lucky if you get the computer.

but for most average shop owners, there is no big payouts, and belive me, the shops are paying big $$$ for materials, and if you dont watch you insurance estimates closley, you will get boned on the the costs of material.

so, all in all, id still listen to the painters opinions, at least the small guys. the dudes in big shops may or may not be told what to use.
