59 7/16 in. wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface. I just measured mine and that's what I got measuring between two pieces of angle iron -one bolted to each brake drum surface as if it were a wheel. Using a plumb bob and marks on the floor I got 59 9/16 in.

    Good to know.
What exactly are you doing with this information? Are you using it to prepare for a rear end swap or just adding to the collective knowledge base here?

I have noticed that this measurement is not readily available so I thought I would post what I found; AND, I want to convert to open driveline and am trying to find what year rear end will fit the best. I am going to remeasure to day just to double check.

I forgot the photos: Aluminum angle leg was 1/8"thick, ruler was 1/4' thick. Measurement was 59 13/16minus 4/16 (ruler) minus 2/16(angle iron) = 59 7/16 in. drum to drum surface.

Most 40 Ford guys like to use a 57/58/59 Ford 9 inch rear end. They are about 1 inch ( per side ) more narrow than the original 40 rear end.

Some folks say that they are difficult to find but the yard I go to has at least a dozen :)
