Back to your original post and Rich's reply. A sectioned body has no class to run in. All SCTA-BNI, USFRA coupe classes require OEM height, width and length.

If your plan is the 130 club deal at World of Speed you should be OK. You will be running only one mile from a standing start. There is no class structure for the 130 club, speed only. A 3.0 rear gear should get you a mile.

I'm bringing back Jeffs thread with a picture of his Bonneville record holding Buick. That's what we call setting a goal and doing it. Well done Jeff. I grabbed the picture from another Bonneville posting here.

That was one of my favorite cars on the salt this year. Also one of the nicest guys you could ever hope to meet. It was touch and go getting through tech, but he got the go ahead.
We visited with him as he was suiting up for his first run. He had a smile on his face I'll never forget! CONGRATS !
Something like this reminds you of what Bonneville is all about!

  4. WEll heck, we need details.
Thanks for posting the pic Rich.

Looks like he got it up to 125 on an open record and something went wrong. Still held on for a record of 104 I think. Have to wait for Jeff to tell the details

  6. Hey folks ,
I got it done ... many 16 hour days ... and great , helpful advice from guys like Rich Fox , Gary Hart and Mike Collison .
    Thanks all !
I had a few "bugs" on the first runs , but ended up running the old Buick hard and strong {and fairly straight} for a XO/GCC record of 130.88 .
    My best run was 133.5
What a GREAT bunch of folks on the salt .
Got some good ideas for bigger numbers next year .

Doug Grieve in the Salt Cat Buick straight 8 turbo Jag got your record Rich at I believe a 173 average. It qualifed for the long course too. He also got the gas record at 175. 29 years is a good long run though to hold that record. The Mekeken ? Bros ran good too at 152 but I dont know if its a record or not in the Bu powered 240 SX. They had 2 2 barrels on it. I had to leave tuesday, even thouggh it was a cool week temp wise the sun still makes me sick due to my pain pump.

I did have a 177 one way in '80 and qualified for long course. But due to water there was no long course. Got the sticker anyway. If I was Jesse James I guess I could claim to still be the record holder. I have only seen pictures of the Salt Cat. It looks really nice. Gota love a Buick eight powered Jag. Good on Jeff and the Salt cat guys.

The way I look at it Rich is that all records are just borrowed for a while. Some like yours for a very long while, 39 years ! The Jag was just what they happened to have and they worked hard on it, built everything them selves , you couldnt meet a nicer couple of guys. Not to steal Brock Arts post but I think he will need to come up with a different non sectioned body to run. It is wild looking and will be sweet when its done but I dont know about it being a legal class car. Im surprised they let him run it at all the way it was

I don't believe it is sectioned. Dan and I made it very clear that a sectioned car would not be legal and Dan has the last word in record impound. I believe that except for the chop it is a full Panamax size barge.

I thought you guys said it was sectioned. I looked at it there but I dont know what a stock one looks like, maybe its the roof that makes it look different. What I meant about running it was that I never saw any side or back glass in the car. At 105 mph hes going to need a bunch more motor and how much the fast guys will tell remains to be seen. One thing I do know is it takes a bunch of money.

Jeff got it to 133 this year. Don't forget he started in March thinking about this deal. I would expect that by next year he will have side windows and a backlite in it. Right now Jeff has his record. What's next time will tell. But he said he was going to do it and he did it. That's better than 99 out of 100 any day. I do hope he learsn how to spell Bonneville by then

I had to leave tuesday before he went that fast. Hes definetly on the right track and with another year should have it done. It will be a wild looking car when its finished. I think I like the bare or clear coated metal better then paint. Brock Art if you look on landracing.com in the fuel injection section you will get some ideas what the other Buick guys are doing as far as induction, rods & pistons

Congratulations. That's quite an accomplishment, and makes it even more of one when you figure in your time factor of starting in May. Talked to you on Saturday and looked for you on Sunday and Monday but couldn't find you. Thought maybe you didn't make it through tech and went home. Good to hear of you getting a record.

Wow, I didnt know that, congatulations! Pretty good for 1st time out to set a record. Salt Cat is running in XO/BGCC & XO/BFCC at USFRA meet in a few weeks if all the smoke stays inside the motor & luck holds out

  22. Great going Jeff, congratulations on your Bonneville run; BNI , XO/GCC class world record 130.888 mph!

Sean and I would love to stop by the ranch to see the car when you have a chance!

    Jeff,
It was nice talking to you in tech. I'm glad that they didn't hassle you too much. They do it for your safety. As they say, "The rules are written in blood". I hope you can keep that in mind as you go forward. Congrats on your record. You have really accomplished a lot in a short time. Hope to see you at World of Speed or next year at Speed Week.
Doug Salt Cat Racing. Remember, When better cars are built, BUICK will build them.

  25. They sure aren't quick off the line when you {mistakedly} switch your 1 & 2nd with 3 & 4th Hurst levers ... { my first run was a 3rd gear start }. Pretty embarassing , if anybody saw it . It turns out , I built the car in record time {ignorance can be bliss} and did not ever run it other than on blocks .Pushed it RIGHT to the end . I did not know the NO TEST DRIVING on the salt rule. My first run on the salt was the first time ever drive .
    Pretty happy overall .

Doug and Salt Cat Team ,
You folks are GODS . Your speed record and hard earned success is the big story . I thought I could catch you {someday} at last years 151 ... but in the 170's ... I'll be the fan waving at your tailights . I touched your car ... but washed my hands first !
    Great job.

Sean and Walter , come on up and witness .

Regarding the sectioned question . I had it staged to be , then Dan Warner and Rich Fox and others informed me of the rules {and my rule book came }.
    I settled for a hard chop and dash mod , with a 5.5" wedge , narrowing the front . Perfectly legal and no issue with the tech issues I had . The biggest problems in tech were my loose , outside the roll cage window net , dash controls location and a low side bar on my roll cage . Dave Green was awsome , as he took time to teach me to build a better car . { sorry for the guys behind me in tech line}

    Thanks everybody for the support.

At WoS last year my vega got written up for having one end of the window net outside of the roll cage. But they let it run. Later Gary Cope, who teched the car called to say that he was in error. That rule was ment for cars in which there is a good possability that the body will leave the frame in a roll over. In a unit body, such as my Vega where is it going to go? Later Dan Warner emailed a conformation of that. If you already changed your net, no harm. If you have not you may want to check with the board.

  27. Rich ,
I had to change it {window net} to race the 2009 SCTA BNI Speedweek event . Meant a second tech inspec . It realy did work out to be a much better / safer leg restraint net .
I have a list of mods {about 5}for next year , to be able to race . The hardest { most work , for a subjective issue } is moving my dash {i.e. ALL on / off & safety controlls } to the right hand , center of car , shifter area , from thier current left hand corner {easy for rescue / crew to see and use} area . It will be expensive and labor intensive . It hurts my head to consider , when I don't believe it is better .
I'll do it , in the end . I just want to race , not debate .

I'm with you on that. If I wanted to join a debating society I would have. Do you plan to be back this year?
