I have a 350 automatic in my '49, behind a 250 6 cyl. Have been running this for about 2 years, no trouble, about 5,000 miles. The other day, drove about 30 miles on highway, got into a small town and slowed down, then the ****** started missing while trying to get back up to speed. Basically would not go into "high gear". Engine RPMs went high, as if a clutch was pushed in (remember this is a 350 AUTO). I slowed to about 35-40, it slid into high gear and was "fine" after that. Last couple days it has been doing it again, but now slipping out of gear at speed, around 50-55. RPMs shoot way up, I pull over or slow down, gets better. Fluid is at the right level, not burnt at all. I checked the vacuum line, does not appear cracked but I am going to replace anyway. I have hear of a small part on the ****** that can go bad (forget name), near the rear of the ******. Or the whole thing may just be toast. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
I believe the part you're thinking of is the governor, but I don't know enough about automatics to say if it's the problem. Have you done anything to the truck lately? I would probably check the shift linkage adjustment first. Good luck.
I tweaked the throttle linkage a month ago. Time to search on the shift linkage adjustment to see if I can figure out how that should work. Thanks
I realize this link to another board may be frowned upon but it would be wrong to post this as my own knowledge. I believe the info you need can be found here: http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/th350-governor-modulator-105697.html
Thanks for the link, after some searching and reading, I need to pull the pan first (never have) and see what's in there. Might buy Sessions book too, automatics have always been a black box to me
did your vac*** line get disconnected...a slipped vac*** line on the modulator of the ****** can cause this too...check your line
No, line is connected. Does not look frayed or worn but I am going to replace it anyway. Then pull the pan.
Might be a clogged filter that allows only some fluid through. Drop pan and replace filter and pan gasket. Try it out and let us know. Could be front pump issues, or even converter going bad. Do the obvious first.
How's reverse? If there's slipping in reverse also, you've smoked the direct clutch pack, a common occurance. Still sounds like time for a tear down, if reverse is OK. Butch/56sedandelivery.
