  5. we rented the u haul car trailer for my friends '50 merc. towed it with a '94 1/2 ton silverado, the trailer had surge brakes, everything was fine just took it slow and told them it was a '66 mustang 6 cylinder. went from the bay area to southern oc.

Watch out for U-Haul. They have a list of vehicles to which they won't rent trailers. It includes Ford Explorers. I know, I have a 98 Explorer. They won't rent to us because they roll over when the original Firestone tires fail. They still won't rent to me even though the tires have been replaced by Ford.

You might do a Google U-Haul and no-rent list to see if you can find out what vehicles are included on the list.

U Haul quoted me a one way price from Morrow Bay to New Orleans for $850. I told them the vehicle was a Model A Ford, they said no problem.

  9. I got tired of renting them 30 years ago and bought one, since then i have been through 4 or 5 of them. make sure they know you are doing out of state a lot won't cover them if something breaks on it.

i have a local equipment rental place that has some decent aluminum trailers that they rent on a per day basis, they have never hassled me about what i am towing or what the hauler is. helps that its in a small town where everyone knows everyone.

  12. If my 54 fit your 51 will:rolleyes:

Like everyone said, you are hauling an Acura, they actually weigh more than and early 50s Chevy.

  13. Our Corp Uhaul here still has 2 sizes on the lot. As well as ramp trucks and dollies.

Must be a California thing. I have been using tow dollies to move cars around for nearly 40 years and never heard that a towed car had to be registered.

Yeah, like has been said. VW bug or also a 28 model A works. Thats the furthest their system goes back. I ran into the same problems when I was trying to tow my 23 T.

DId you look into just having a service deliver it for you? I would think it would be worth it when you add up the gas at $3/gallon and all the time and food, and trailer rental etc..

The DMV will issue a "1 day" moving permit (no charge) if you are transporting the vehicle from point A to point B.
If the tires come in contact with the pavement, the vehicle must be registered. They (DMV) do not like to lose out on registration fees.
That's why it's easier to trailer it.

I owned a Tow Dolly for 2 weeks,it was more of a hassle than it was worth.
At the time I was towing a Sidekick and since it was 4wd,it was better to "flat tow" it with a tow bar than use the dolly and tow it Backwards.

Just to toss my experiences into this mix, a few years ago I tried to rent a one-way trailer in Colorado Springs to haul a Jeep back to Tucson but no one would rent one without renting a truck or box van, too. They didn't ask what I was going to tow or what I was towing with (a 3/4-ton, tow-packaged Chevy.) I had an enclosed trailer at the time and finally emptied it out (tire racks, racing gear, etc.) and took it up there to get the Jeep.

why did you cover it? the cover is going to beat the hell out of the body? I have trailered cars thousands of miles and never covered them!!! besides that cover will act like a parachute once you start going down the road...

  27. I'll second the thing about the cover beating the car up, you'll find out no matter how good you think you have it tied down it ain't enough.

  28. Don't forget to stop after a hundred miles or so and retighten the straps, they will strech, make damn sure none of them are run over a sharp or pointed area as they will tear. also hope you got 4 of them on it, one on each corner, ya don't want to break the law do ya! as others have said that tarp will be history in a few hundred miles.
