Anybody have an idea for a temp fuel tank? My 1939 sits a lot and I don't want to put a new tank in it until I know the gas wont rot in new tank from sitting. Any ideas? Things that do/don't work?

Small 5 gal boat gas tank. Has all the pickups (may have to change some fittings) and some have a gauge on them. Got mine used for $7. Ran it for a long time and never had a problem. Buddy of mine still uses it in her car.

Actually you could put a small (1 gal) gas can behind the grille with a piece of copper tube cut at an angle so it would draw. Safe? Not really but it will work and it's cheap. Of course I'm ***uming you're doing this to get it home, not drive all over.

Careful! a buddy of mine back in the early sixties used an open can to start the new engine in his pretty chopped and channeled model A sedan. Yep it was on the floor right where the exhaust was pointed. (we were still young and dumb) It really screwed up the paint and body work. I don't like open cans of flammable liquids.

wasent easy to find a tank 25 years ago

the hand pump made it easer to start when you ran out of gas:)
and you just carred it with you when you ran out
    did that once or twice

Yea thats not really a permanent thing even if you get used to it. I had one in a corvair hooked to an electric pump. ran it that way for a year.
Standard story, lent it to a friend... burned real good he said.
Oh and replacement was, "my bad"

I needed a gas tank for a sandrail once and bought a steel five gallon gas can, before i put any gas in it i soldered a br*** barbed fitting through the side at the bottom. I actually found a place on the sandrail where it would wedge into and secured it with a bungee. I eventually got a real tank for the sandrail and I have used the gascan "tank" several times for those projects that need a quick trip around the block to make sure the brakes/steering/ trans, or whatever is working. I set it on the floor and run a line through the firewall (usually lots of holes in project firewalls) to the fuel pump. My neighbor that was a cop once went for a ride with me in a car with no gl***, no front sheet metal, no mufflers and no lights, he held onto the gas can so it wouldn't tip over when we beat on the car.....:p

Maybe consider incorporating a plastic late model tank into the build. No more rot problems. Ever.

    good luck
