If this post doesn't belong here, please delete it. Also, I am not affiliated with, nor work for the company that makes this fan I swear.

I've read a ton of posts on the HAMB about cooling. My rod has a little over 2-5/8" clearance between the pully and the radiator core, and had only 6" diameter clearance in the front of the motor due to very poor design (whoops), so a mechanical fan would not work. After trying various combinations of different sized puller/pusher fans and a fan/shroud puller combo from cooling components (read alot about that one on the HAMB), nothing seemed to work. So I ordered this puller fan called the sidewinder from the-fan-man. It is only 1.5" deep and the motor is located at the edge of the fan rather than the center. Honestly, this was my ONLY hope for a fan or I would have had to use one huge ass pusher and still probably would have overheated all the time. Holy cat piss is that fan amazing!! I'm running a 383 stroker with a 21"X18" AFCO aluminum 2 core and I started up the car and the temp rose to 205 and I hit the fan switch and the temp quickly returned to ~180. It will damn near pull small children and pets through the radiator!!! I wanted any Hambers out there who were loosing sleep over cooling fan problems like I was to hear my story. I hope it helps even one person with their purchase decision. For me... I've been smiling about it for days. They advertize the fan for ~$450 on the website, but call them and kiss their butts, I didn't pay near that much. Even if it was $450, it is by far the best electric fan out there (in my opinion).

It's 2400 cfm & works great if you have no other options. Pricey though.

The website says that the fan is 2400 cfm on the product information page, but if you go to the ordering page, there is another little piece of info about the fan that says 2200cfm. WFT?? Talking with the sales rep, it sounded to me like they didn't even really know because he said the fan pulls "more than a Spal 16", probably 2200-2600cfm". I took a gamble and I can tell you that it pulls AT LEAST 2500cfm. Now... I don't have any scientific instruments around to measure that, but I've been through a crap ton of fans in the last few months, and this sidewinder fan is amazing. To give you an idea, I usually run the fan a little after I shut the engine off. I have a windshield that tilts out to let the air in while driving, and I can feel the air from the fan while sitting inside my car after the engine is shut down, I kid you not. By the way, the fan is advertized as a 16" fan. The one they sent me was 17", so either they changed the design and didn't update their website, or I forgot how to use a tape measure. Hope that helps. Doc... I'll get pictures soon.

They stopped making it for awhile. Then started up again. The old fan was rated at 2470 & ran a straight blade if memory serves me. The new fan has a swept blade.
This is sold by Mattsen Radiator.

I wonder if that could be hidden in a fan shroud so it wouldnt be really noticeable?

I helped install one on a friends 32 Ford w/ a big blower. No room for a fan. Looked out of place so we bombed it flat black. Looked much better.

Thats pretty cool and low profile..
    got one question for you?

what do you do when it shits on you way out in the middle of F-ing no where?

or even in town ..no shelf parts to repair it

  11. That can be asked about MANY of the parts that we use on our heaps.
Personally I can't be that worried about that or I'd never go anywhere. Where so I get a Firestone Dirt Track Tire in Podunk Iowa, What if my Top Loader craps out in East Bumfuk, Suppose my custom Griffin Radiator takes a big rock in One Horse, KY. You get the idea. That's what cell phones, the Internet and Overnight Fed Ex are for :D

As for the fans, We have used many (20+) of Jack Mattson's fans over the years and have yet to have one fail. Plus if a fan fails at least the car should cool at speed and get you to the next town, where Fed Ex can deliver.

Great question. I would have much rather used an mechanical fan, but as you can see, poor radiator placement planning has led me down this path. I do have some solutions to your question though.

    Quick solutions:
    1) That is what AAA is for
    2) On out of town trips I carry a pusher fan and some cable ties. 15 min. of some creative wiring and I'd probably make it home... maybe...
    3) Drive faster :)

    Long term solutions:
    1) I'd call the company and ask them to replace the fan or risk having my story posted all over the internet. I'd like to think the company would stand by their product.
    2) It is just an electric motor right? I'd hope that it's something that could be repaired.

    What drives it?
    A belt?
    Gears, and a drive shaft?

I honestly don't know. I think some others on this post may have more info. My guess is that it is a belt. The housing going from center of fan to motor is too thin to contain a drive shaft, and I would think I would hear if it was chain or gear driven.

I should also mention that the fan comes with pretty slick mounting brackets, they supply everything, you just need a drill and a rivet gun. Each of the two brackets come with two threaded shafts, each brackets shafts match up with the top two and bottom two holes of the fan, you simply screw on the nuts to attach the fan to the brackets, and rivet the brackets to the sides of the radiator.

  16. "cool" idea. I had all kinds of over heating issues with my 40 Merc. Made my own shroud Cuz it's so tight. That would have been a good thing to have.
Glad it's working so well. I know what a pain in the ass overheating is.

Resurrecting due to renewed interest on another board.
PS Mattson's Custom Radiator is still doing incredible work, highly recommended.

There is likely a toothed belt running from the motor to the fan's center.
