I know there are mounds of info regarding T5 installs on various different threads. I read through most of them and didnt find the info I was looking for. I have an S10 T5 with a 14 spline input shaft 1" diameter. I am looking to put it behind a 46 flathead with the stock flywheel which is 10 inches in diameter.

Does anyone know where to get a clutch disc for these dimensions (part number etc)? I tried Napa auto and they said they did not carry anything. Is this definately a custom disc that needs to be ordered from a Cornhuskers/other specialty vendor?

I don't know a number, but I've heard the Astro T5 disc works with the stock pressure plate. Just go to a reputable clutch shop and see what they got.

try going to a place that does does brakes and clutch disks. take them a clutch disk from an s-10 and tell them you want it to be 10 inches instead, they should be able to do it. i got a 10.5 inch clutch disk for my t-5 from pat mcguire at wilcap. 200 bucks got me the clutch disk and pressure plate from him

  4. When I did this swap, I used a stock S-10, 9 inch disc under the stock ford flathead pressure plate. Worked great although mine was a later 26 spline disc.....no big deal

  5. This has come up a lot here recently, hit the searrch button on the upper right and type in "flathead+transmission" Flat Ernie has a compilation thread that covers MANY of the T5 articles that have crossed through here.

Here we go, I've been gathering this info also for one I'm gonna do on a 283 in a t-roadster.

The Astro Van clutch disc 1"-14 spline, is an 11 inch, I used this in a 350 I did a couple of years ago, The GM number for the disc is 14075718. an aftermarket number is D4212. It worked well.

The kinda 'stock" S-10 is 9-1/8 dia and 1"-14. GM number is 15608691.Aftermarket CD4203.

Another S-10 number is for a 9-5/8 or sometimes called 9-11/16 and also 1"-14. The GM number is 14064185. Aftermarket is CD4201(might be CP4201). This is for 82-85 Chevy,GMC, Pontiac, AMC.

If you compare the surface square inches, the 9-5/8 has 43 sq. in.(one side) the 11 has 59 sq. in. A small Chevy 10.4 has 49 sq. in. So this 9-5/8 clutch would be very close to the 10.4 chevy, I think better than the 9-1/8 would be.

Now All I need is an online parts store that will sell just the disc, and not the whole clutch kit.AutoZone got the 9-11/16 for 25.99+6.00 core CP-4201.

Hope this info is useful to you others with the T-5 fever:)

The stock S10 9-1/8" disk works well with a 9.5" pressure plate - you'll never noticed the difference.

If you're using a 10" clutch setup, you're likely going to need the services of a good clutch shop. Most large cities have them - they cater to the big truck crowd primarily, but most will work with you. Do as pineapple power mentioned - tell 'em what you need.

My compilation article glosses over clutch disks by basically recommending folks use a clutch rebuilder to build them a custom disk.

I used the 4201 disc on my 235,its a little smaller then the 10 inch it originally had but wont make any difference. Go to a clutch and driveline shop if you have one as the local napa and other parts stores would only sell me a complete clutch set,I went to the clutch shop and asked for the 4201 disc and they handed me one and now its installed. The question concerns a Flathead Ford. It's my understanding that the standard S-10 disc hub available from any parts store interferes with the crankshaft bolts in many Flathead conversions. Some guys have a special disc made up. Cornhuskers has a special disc for this application.

Look up AV8Paul in the HAMB member list and give him a PM. I believe he had a disc made not too far from you in New England somewhere. He loves his T-5 Flathead conversion.

I put a T-5 behind my Studebaker using a standard S-10 parts store disc but the Stude doesn't have the bolt interference problem that some Flathead's do.

  15. There is also a clutch disc from 82-84 2.8 v6 S-10 applications. 9 11/16 OD, 14 splines. Find a parts store that sells AMS Clutch Rhino Packs, set #04-513 or 04-069. Clutch disc part #384201. Double check for clutch hub interference like Tommy says.

From a thread I initiated last year,
"Anyway, I'm glad to say that with the info DirtyT gave me, that a '70 6 cylinder Camaro used a 10" disc, I found the animal at dialaclutch.com. They only show kits on their website but I called them and they are shipping me just the disc. They seemed very helpful."
    Hope this helps.

The interferance problem can be solved by spotfacing or counterboring the bolt holes to sink the bolts a little deeper into the flywheel. On the 153 tooth Chevy wheel, only about .060 needs to be taken out to use ARP bolts, they have a very shallow head.

You could also use a solid disc without the spring thing, but maybe for a street driven car that might not be a good idea. The springs are a vibration damper kinda thing to protect the trans and rear from the pulses of power.

And 36tbird, wouldn't the Camaro from 70 have an 1-1/8 10 spline?? Like all the old Chevys, until the modern 26 spline started.?

    Frank

BTW, not trying to hijack the flathead foucus of the thread here. But when we get to the clutch, we're all facing the same issues, no matter what the engine in front of the T-5 is.

FWIW I had a hard time locating anybody locally that could or would try to find just the S-10 disk. They all had clutch kits but the separate disk seemed to present a problem. I checked all the online parts houses with no luck.

I knew about Ft Wayne Clutch. A call to them had my disc on the way cheaper than anyone else that I could find including shipping (that hidden expense). I have a friend that had a clutch chatter problem. He called and they guaranteed a no chatter clutch. It wasn't as cheap as the box store clutch kits but it solved his problem.

The guys you talk to know clutches and more than just their pt #s

I did not ask but they might be able to build a special disc. They use a hub from one Chevrolet product with the right spline and the rest is just standard S-10.

I make this disc in true 9-10- or 11 inch diameter with the 1 inch 14 spline. No flywheel bolt problems like there with some discs. There are some stock discs that may work, but I sure sell a lot of my discs..

with the stock s10 disc i got from autozone, i had to take alittle off the flywheel side of the hub on the disc, and just a little off the flywheel bolt heads, so for so good.....

  21. We fought this same battle! How to mate the t5 to the flathead. We did it this way: We be using a '49 flattie with the two piece "truck" bell housing. We got the engine and rock crusher truck tranny togeather. Used an aluminum adapter between the two (got ours from Dwight Bond in Nebraska). We heard of the "Astro Van" clutch disc trick. Well we got one................. perfect spline match for our the t5 which came out of a banger S-10! Using stock Ford pressure plate. We did have some slight interference with the Astro clutch disc rivets, etc. dragging on the flywheel bolts and on the edge of the stepped down center section of the flywheel. Took the flywheel to our machine shop for a new ring gear and we widened out the stepped center section section of the fly wheel by about 1/4". Also headed down to NAPA and got a package of "special" fly wheel bolts with low profile heads. We are using the old bearing retainer tube that came with the original 4 speed truck tranny. Had to slightly widen out the four bolt holes where the retainer bolts up to the face of the tranny. Used a Dremel tool on this. In our case this bolts directly to the new aluminim adapter we are using. Using stock throw out bearing. Installed a new guide bushing in the flywheel and the t5 input shaft appears to be just the right length. Slapped the thing togeather and it all seems to fit! Still working on the chasis and hope to fire it up soon.

    great info!
I've just built an adapter plate to mount a T5 to my Packard Straight 8. I'm using a Chevy truck bellhousing. I'm in the process of fabricating the adapter ring (5 1/8" OD, 4 11/16" ID) to fit the trans to the bell.
For the clutch my plan is to re-drill the flywheel to match a GM diaphragm style pressure plate. I'm trying to decide what clutch kit to order as I'd like to the pressure plate on hand before drilling the bolt holes in the flywheel.

    Thanks for all the info

Use a Jeep 10 spline input shaft in the t5. new available for around $60.00. Problem solved.
