My kinda display... Mom's old bed spread, tin foil on the jack stands and a gal in leopard skins! Gary
I saw it in about 59 at Oakland. Thought it was the most beautiful thing I ever saw. Next to my English teacher Mrs Peterson.
The tin foil on the jackstand was the first thing I saw!!! Can you imagine the **** you would get if you displayed a high end car (or any car for that matter) like that today?!?!?! But, hey, I guess it would be "just like they used to do it"!!! And yeah, whether it fits anyone elses mold for "cool" or not, I will always love the Ala Kart.
i built the model of it about a dozen times, so i'd say yeah i like it. may have to try the tin foil jack stand trick tho
looks like more people like it than not. personally, i freakin love it!!! if you dont like it, maybe your on the wrong site.
I like it better now than when it was first completed. Contrary to what a lot of you seem to think, show rods made a lot of us quit going to car shows. Too much angel hair, mirrors and tinfoil and the cars were impractical.
I saw it when I was about 13 years old at the Pittsburgh auto show. It was the first big car show I'd ever attended. When I walked in and saw the Ala Kart, it was like something from another world, I just couldn't believe how beautiful it was.
Does "sort of like it" count? I liked the idea, liked the custom nose, and the back half of the body, liked the injected Dodge, liked the paint, but felt that the car went overboard with the upholstry and the trim on the bed, and the canted taillights with little nerf bars on them.....but still it's one of the most famous show roadsters and a lot better than the Barris show roadsters that followed, at least in my opinion.
Ala Kart rocks, saw it unrestored in San Francisco a few years back. built the kit when I was a kid. I'd like to have it in my front room parked next to the Lil Coffin
The Ala Kart kicks major ***... I've got a pic of it on my wall framed with the Automic Punk, Orbitron, and a few other show rod center pages from Rod & Custom...Bad *** truck...
The Uncertain T, Ala Kart, and Lil' Coffin would be in my climate controlled VAULT. Viewing limited to me.......
Had dinner with Richard Peters the original owner of Ala Kart and he was telling me somebody is building a true I beleive 5/8 running scale of the ala Kart. Richard talked to him at the Detroit show , and put in to be first in line to buy it if the guy ever wanted to sell it. Richard still has some nice cars' Gary
The Ala Kart. I Used to see it being drivren here in Phoenix back in 67 or 68, When AMT was making real cars here. Last time I saw it it was in front of a Good year tire store, with Good year decals on the rear fenders......My favorite show car....
funny so much **** thrown a Mr Barris on here and then 85.5% dig his ****.interesting...............George will always be cool for the cars he and his shop really were involved with in my book (well alot of his books I have),,,,,,,,,,,,,I dont want to start a I hate george bs **** here, just a thought
I liked the touring back panel used on the cab. I stole the louvered apron idea for my old RPU. But, never could get into the Barris horse collar nose.
During the the Sam and George days, they did some very cool work. Now later during the George years, say the John Travolta trans am, not so cool for me. The Hirohata Merc and the Ala Cart will always be tops on my lottery list.
Probably, at least in my opinion, the best thing that came out of the Barris shop. Danbury Mint does a very nice replica of the Ala Kart.
Not much different 50 years later. Subs***ute billet for the angel hair and mega cubic dollars in place of the tin foil and you have todays show car. Living in the midwest, the indoor car shows gives a car guy a place to socialize during the off driving months.
So, is that Mrs. Peterson in leopard skin? (G) Even though the Ala Kart is a custom and I really like hotrods, you would have had to be pretty ******** not to like the car when it was new. It got a lot of press back then and was promoted as being "The Ultimate" by all of the magazines, which which was the same as having lots of TV time today. Larry T
I have never been much of a custom car guy.............but I have always loved the Ala Kart, to me its a blend of a rod and a custom, The colors and paint scheme are perfect.
