I am looking for a front end to put on my 40 ford truck, would like a 3-4" drop axle, dont care if its tubular or I-beam, also spindles, backing plates, hairpins, pretty much the whole 9 yards! Let me know if you have something or know of anything! Thanks!
stay with the stock unsplit wishbones if you can . Magnum makes an axle with a 38-1/2" perch center. keep your original spindles and upgrade to f-100 brakes , or disc if you must. you will need deep dropped bolt on steering arms too
Havent really thought much about the steering yet? But I have a disc brake setup on my 9" so I was going to just run juice brakes on the front. Im not a rich man at all so whatever I can get my hands on at a descent price!
nothing wrong with spitting the bones , but why do it if you don't have to? the only reason to do it on a `40 is to make room for a late model transmission ...he didn't mention one so i ***ume he has a stock motor/******. i have used the Magnum axle in several stock type 39/40 Fords without spitting the bones and it worked great. one of them i later put a 350 chevy adapted to a `39 transmission and the bones were still unsplit the car in my avatar has spit bones because of the 283/th350
X is cut to clear trans - wide yoke (28 to 31) on bone to clear sides of trans - ball mount on bottom of new (tube) trans mount.
Splitting the bones gives you room for an oil pan when you swap engines. Aslo of you do any mods like flattening the spring an unsplit wish bone smaks the ch***is and limits the amount of suspension travel. Some fellas say that an unslpit bone handles better, but you can't prove it by me. Perhaps on the drafting board but nothing tht you can feel in the seat of your pants.
I've used the AMC spindle bosses bolted to the face of the stock ford spindle, I got the idea from a R&C annual back in the 70's. I'll try to find it if possible. That trick lets you drop the front end about 3" and you get disc brakes as well, without splinting the wishbones. I also put a GM steering box from a 70's Nova, Chevell etc with little trouble, and the Ford pitman arm matches up!
Oh yes you should care. DO NOT use a tube axle with a split wishbone. a tube axle cannot twist like an I-beam and it WILL break something
