I have this mostly complete SW tach drive that I would like to run on my roadster, anybody out there familiar with these? Can anyone tell me what the missing pieces look like and where I might be able to get parts / a cable for this? I plan on running a SW mechanical tach that apears to have a small square imput drive on the back and noticed the cable on the drive end looks to be slotted for a key type piece. Also apears to be a 1/4" square drive on the crank side? Clearley I'm missing some parts. Any help would be apreciated. Thanks Chris
hmmm frank ezold(sp) in westfield ma. has one on his model a roadster. here's his shop number "ezold's model A garage" (413) 562-0273
Here's a link for missing parts. Let me know how this works out as I'm planing on doing it myself but fabricating my own brackets. http://www.pegasusautoracing.com/productdetails.asp?RecID=254 Terry
You wouldn't happen to have pics of the crank nut and related components? I'm pretty sure there is a special crank nut and possibly another component that fits between... I'm sure I can come up with something for the crank but finding a cable might be the tough part unless its some sort of standard deal?
Thanks! the cable looks like it wont work with the tach I have as it has a small female square drive in it...
Any speedo shop can make the short cable between the drive and the crank nut. The hard part is drilling the square hole in the front of the crank nut. The way I did it was to take the input (with the square hole already in it) from an old seized/trashed Ford speedo, and have it turned down to about 5/16 inch diameter, then knurled. Pushed it into a 5/16 inch hole drilled into the front of the crank nut. Used a little Lock***e as well. Works great. One thing you'll want to verify before spending any more cash on your configuration, is if you have room for the thing. Many times the front crossmember is in the way. I put one on a stock-crossmembered '32 (not a dropped Model A crossmember) and it barely fit. Would not have fit if an A was used in the '32. Of course you could maybe raise the engine, just so you can use the tach drive.
Pegasus has the square drive bushing that you press into your stock crank nut after you drill a hole for it. They also have the flexible square drive cable to connect the two. I bought the whole Smith's drive and came with both parts. Its been working great on my flathead for 3 years.
1935Ron, thanks for posting pics. Is yours the variety that bolts directly to the crank? as in the threaded nut at the back is a part of the drive unit? MYKE here on the HAMB has one of those I think. Sounds crazy but I'm not sure if he has a bracket. The cable actually prevents it from rotating... The pegasus drive bushing looks to be much smaller than the square in the tach drive? do you know the dimentions of the whole unit? as per alchemy's post its a damn tight fit... Very good point. In the intended config It wont fit. Its tight as hell but I "think" I might be able to sandwich it in there if I shave the crank nut way down and make some of the parts my self. I'm running a 32 frame with a stock A front member. it sits about a 1/2" down from the top of the frame. Looks like if I shave the hand crank alignment dohicky off the spring bracket it "might" fit...
Yes it goes right into the crank, but I have seen them used with a bracket. The Bracket I have seen fot the SW style that I have is different than yours, I have only seen a few ,one on a hot rod, the other on a old dirt car, it sort of reminds me of a bent fork... that straddles it.By the way just for kicks the casting # or part # on this one is SW95263 then there is a stamped # 74-l V8
