Do people ask how much you have in your car, and gasp if you tell them the truth?!?

I don't have all that much in my car so it's not a problem.

  2. I have a friend/acquaintance who always wants to know what I paid for things and/or what I got for them when I sold them. I automatically cut what I paid in half and double what I actually got for whatever it was. He hasn't figured it out in over 5 years. ROTFLMAO!

I no longer answer that question ...
Because when I tell the truth about the 32 3W ... folks think I am lying ... big time.

I am in way too deep ... to ever get my money back ... but then, I did not build it to sell.

I have had the 32 Roadster so long ... I have no idea how much I have in it ... but I know it is less
than what today's current value is. :D

I told a guy " Lemme finish this $2.35 burger and have a swig of my .99 coke after wiping my mitts with my $35.00 jeans. I stole it yesterday and I'm tryin to sell it."
I dopnt know if he 'got it' but he moved on. He was a gold chainer type. A real person gets the whole story and tries to get away after a few minutes.

A couple of years ago at the GoodGuys event in Puyallup I overheard a lady saying that her mother has said they had better not have spend more than $7500. on there car cause that was all it was worth. The lady did not tell her mother they had spent that much on the rear end. The car in question was a very nicly done 62 Impala.

DueceRoadster, those are a perfect set of cars you have. Very nice. How much did they cost you? HAHAHA! Just kidding.

Yeah, the question of cost is RUDE.

There are a very few people who are genuinely interested in what it costs to do something right, or to do it yourself, or what it costs to job something out. I will provide general info to people that are honestly interested, but am never specific about my own car.

The rest of the people questioning, the idiots, are not gonna get an answer.

It is not that difficult to tell the difference between the cool and the uncool observers...

And regarding those who are getting mad because you won't tell them, or because you won't quote them a price on a car not for sale, I have no problem offending them, because they have already offended me.

I made the mistake of finally blurting a price out once to a jerk in Indy who kept persisting on and on for a price on my car (after repeatedly telling him it was not for sale). Then he made it a point to crawl all over the car and explain why everything was wrong with it. Screw off, "friend".

Then the next year, the same guy shows up at the same show like an old buddy and says. "Hey, I see you still haven't sold your car..." After that, he wants to stand around and be pals... Yeah right.

Best line I ever read or heard in response to, "Is it for sale?", especially after telling the person no and having them continue to persist?

"Sure, bring a bucket full of $100 bills and start stacking them on the table. When you get high enough, I will let you know..."

I play dumb (which isn't hard) when they ask me.....
I tell them I don't know... I've never added it up. Then when they ask me how much I would sell it for... I tell them its not for sale. And if they won't leave it alone and ask me how much I have it insured for... I tell them it is none of their business.

I tell them I traded my wife for my car, ( not really true, I lost her in a poker game). If these bozos gotta ask, they don't know much about the car hobby.

Of course the question is rude. Of course I always have a smart ass question as a reply to rude people. Example: How much doyu pay for your wife's undies?:D

I usually tell them I will get back to them, after I have driven all the value out of it. Or they can come up with a figure...John

pisses me off when people come to a cruise nite and just think its a used car lot and that everything is for sale. Walk up and ask, What do you want for it? well right now, i want you to keep your kids off the running boards and fenders.
When asked about the cost, I tell them, I don't know but I can tell you what I have it insured for. 30 grand.
Years ago when Shirley Muldowney was going to make a come back she was looking for sponsors. She said in an interview that she was amazed at how many people thought you went top fuel racing on 10 grand. She said, Hell, if you don't have a million bucks you can't even make all the shows!

That's excellent and the one I shall use from now on.

As pointed out here several times, anyone who would ask that question is ignorant or rude or both. It's all I can do to keep from being rude in return.

Everything is for sale, just give 'em a price that you'd be happy with no matter how rediculious

When someone asks what it's worth from now on, I will reply: "$750,000.00" so that when they try to forward to story to someone else THAT person will say their full of shit.

If they knew shit about cars they would have a pretty good idea of what it's worth. Today- what you have in it, what it's worth & what you can get are 3 different stories.
