i blew up a ford 302 (motor came from a 1973 truck) and I'm thinking of swapping it for a 351W, can i just get a long block 351w and swap over everything?? i know the distributor is different, but what about the flexplate? timing cover? intake? anything else?? thanks for your help
Intake manifold won't fit, higher deck height makes the motor wider and taller. I think the flexplate should be the same; not sure about the timing cover.
Intake won't cross over, The 351 has a taller deck than the 302. The timing cover will bolt on but ford used three different timing marks so it may not be right for the damper, which also must match the flex plate balance and the engine should have been balanced to match both. Actually, all in all not much more than the heads will work for you. Headers will bolt on, but probly won't line up with the old exhaust, also because of the deck hight difference.
Timing cover, distributor, oil pan, intake manifold are 351W specific. There might be a few parts I'm missing but those are the biggies.
the year of the replacement 351w will be an issue as far as flywheel balance is concerned...sbf engines built 11/81 and later have a 50 oz. imbalance and earlier ones have a 28 oz. imbalance. Gotgas, 351w's use the same timing cover as the 289/302... however, you cant mix & match the covers and water pumps for reverse rotation (5.0l fox-body-type) water pumps with the conventional rotation ones.
Unfortunately, we Ford guys have to suffer when it comes to swapping from one engine to another. The old saying goes " If ya take a part off a blue Ford, it won't fit on a red one!". The 351 has many differences that will bolt on, but will ruin your engine. Watch flywheels, distributors, pushrods, etc. They are all engine and year specific. The intake is different. If you get an early 351, at least you will be ahead of the game. Good luck.
