I have a customer car that has a need for a small steering box to be used for traditional style steering (non cross steer) on a 30 A. The customer would like to stay away from cowl steering, and the combo of a big nailhead and a considerable engine setback are limiting me to finding a really small box. I have an F1 box for it but it wont fit anywhere. Anybody ever used a VW box? I was checking one out and they are pretty tiny....i would just be concerened with durability. Corvair? Thanks, Scotty
never have done the vw steering box on front engined setup (heavy front end) car, but have built several sand rails, drag cars and a class 5-1600 desert race car w/ those steering boxes in the past (im a former VW guy.) offroad, those boxes have been hammered and hold up pretty well. i feel pretty good about the durability of the box in a hot rod. sounds like you're having fun...... nice. -scott noteboom
VW Type 1's and 2's get used here quite alot. I use a type 2 box on a cowl steer set up on my 32, however theres plenty others that have used the type 1 in the trad mount and also Land Rover boxes are another small compact box worth a look at.
Have you looked into early VW bus boxes? Maybe you could put one under the rail. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=308853&highlight=vw+bus+box Or a mustang box. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=330924&highlight=mustang+steering+box
