Hi - I did a search of the H.A.M.B. and found a post by Brainangus that stated:

"With full weight of car and engine setting on the suspension, insert the front universal joint yoke into the tailstock of the transmission---Push it in fully, then pull it back 3/4". the measurement from the center of this yoke (where the universal "spider" fits) to the same point on the yoke attached to the rearend will give the dimension required to build a new driveshaft."

And I was wondering - Does the driveshaft need 3/4" play? Or is the plan that the new driveshaft will eat up some of that play? Is 3/4" standard for other makes, like Dodge or Ford?

    Thanks.

3/4 is a pretty standard rule of thumb. The rear end moves closer ro the tranny under load, so some play is necessary.

its called "wrap up" you have to have movement for and aft for drive line "wrap up" the suspension has to move at stop and accel , 3/4 is just about the right amt of movement , what is your driveline angle ? less than desired (1-2 degrees) will change the wrap efect . depending on what yoke and trans you have , this can be different , most have plenty of room , also if your yolk has a "bead" where the seal ran , you can move this some to run on fresh surface , also dont believe all the nay sayers that state "you must balance the shaft" ive done many with a hose clamp and washer moved to position while running on stands and changing position of said clamp ( seems micky mouse ) but it works and saves about $100 bucks . im running 0-1/16 angle with a self made shaft and 1" extra movement at yolk and its fine , ive done this many times , good luck mopar210

Contact the driveline shop before measuring. Some do it differently than others.

    Yeah - what Comet said.

I used Inland Empire Driveline http://www.iedls.com/home.html. The web site has a page with easy to follow measuring instructions. It came in just a few days and fit perfectly.

Very good advice...not all shops measure the same way. some go from cap to cap and some from the output shaft end to cap center..best to ask first.

I'll echo this advice, too. The last one I had made they told me to measure from the end of the tail HOUSING to one of the bolt holes on the rear end flange.

I use this have this for reference
but every shop is diff so as stated before ask your drive shaft shop how they would like the measurements center to center is the best if you have your trans yoke
Drive shafts but if its on paper and you both have a copy there is no misunderstanding

And no I dont work for them just good info

  9. I just had this done and the shop said if I measure from the yoke they will subtract 1" and if I pull the yoke out 1" and give them that measurement they will make it to that lenght.
