1956 olds rear end interchange?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by skunk victim, Jul 11, 2009.

  1. hey guys, i need to get a driveshaft made for my 27 coupe. i think the olds rear is 54-56, i need everything from the piece on the driveshaft to the universal joint. ive seen the joints all over the place but will anything other than 54-56 olds work for the driveshaft? any other cars i can hunt down?

    thanks

if there is 2 grooves in the yoke then its a pont. or olds rear end.

I have an Olds rear end in my coupe...
Any good driveshaft place will make the driveshaft and weld on the yokes for your trans and rear

  4. Pontiac may interchange, but I'd look in a Hollander book to be sure. The rearend itself changed in '57 to a new design.

Pontiac/Olds 47-56 should all pretty much be the same. The rear end is similar for 37-46 and may work as well. Check an old catalog for the u joint application to see what it will cover. As mentioned any good driveshaft shop should have that info. If your going out looking for a used one, should look something like this pictured.
