Hi ! I have a Olds cupe 1947 mod 68 in the car is a hydramatic transmision. What oil shall i use in it? Thanks for your answer/Jonte Sweden
I always used Type F transmission in all my units including power glides.Been doing it for many years with no problems and now they have mercron II which is about the same thing.
Same here, although I don't have any experience with the early GM automatics yet. The only exception to this is that I also use some tractor trans-hydraulic oil in units going in high power applications. From what I've seen, the tractor oil is a better lubricant, withstands heat better, and makes clutches grab better than type F. It is a bit thicker than normal trans oil though so converters will act a bit different with it than it will with ****** oil in it. I've talked to several guys who were working in ****** shops in the '70s and '80s and all of them said that the shops they worked in bought bulk oil and put the same thing in all the units they built/serviced. It was type F.
Mercon is the Ford Equivalent of GM's Dexron. The Roman numerals just mean a later version for later model transmission but they are all compatible with each other. Type F was the "Ford only" fluid used in the 50s-60s often used in PowerGlide and Turbo350, 400 rebuilds, a little stickier than Dexron. Type A was the early Automatic fliuid used in the 40s-50s-60s in non-Fords.
I was told by my ****** guy to use Dextron II in my 1959 Hydromatic, Any advantages in changing to the Mercon fluid ???
Can you help me out here? How do o check the transmission fluid on a 47 olds if there is no dipstick?
Look under the right front floor mat ...You may find a little metal plate on the floor or a rubber plug with a short dipstick & filler port right on the trans .... My memory is gettin' kinda "fuzzy".......
