Just remembered that you already pulled valve-covers. Let us know what you find.-----Reek

Hey Nerdatnight, another vote for the cracked flywheel theory. I'm spending my weekend with my own engine knock, found it last night. I think mine's a loose rocker.

Sounds to me like a lifter that's not staying pumped up except when oil pressure is increasing due to rpms increasing. A mechanic's stethoscope will quickly tell you which one.

not always, i used one on mine and could only narrow if down to the drivers side rear. went rocker stud to stud and never got a definate location. sucked...

Smartass? Just trying to save you some work. If the bearings are bad you will find some of them in the filter. So cut the filter apart and get a sense of humor!!

  9. It sounds like a stuck lifter plunger. Here's how I find a bad lifter:

    1. Remove valve cover
    2. Start engine and let it idle and keep a rag handy for oil control just in case.
    3. Watch the rocker arms move at idle and see which one is moving in time with the ticking sound.
    4. Touch each moving rocker arm(over the pushrod) with your finger. The bad lifter should "feel" different than the other rockers.
    5. When I think I've found the bad lifter, I take a wooden handled hammer with the head in my hand and I put the wooden end down on the moving rocker arm over the pushrod and apply pressure down on the rocker arm and the clicking should stop for a few seconds. Then I let off, and the ticking should return.

In reverse, this "hammer handle" method, if used on a good lifter, should make it tick for a few seconds after you let off pressure as the engine refills the good lifter.

If a bad lifter isn't collapsed but only has a piece of trash in the oil passage in it, binding it up, I've managed in the past to clear lifters that are blocked with this method.

Good luck to you and please update.

Handle it like anyother sitch, "Hope you've got damn good insurance" should be the wording. Family is family, but repairs costs $$$.

  12. I only threw some things out there because I hate trying to diagnose a problem with a car and finally find out it was some stupid thing I didn't check because I didn't think that could possibly be the problem. Not trying to imply anyone is dumb by it.

you previously stated your car has an electric fuel pump, is the original mecanical fuel pump still on the engine?

Like a couple of others have said, I think it's likely a worn out lifter that starts to
bleed down at idle and pumps back up with increased rpm and oil pressure.
Your video was good enough to pin it down to a lifter in my opinion.
I like your car a lot lady but I would love it with a 347 Pontiac engine!
Fenders can be fixed. Give mom a break. She cleaned crap off your butt.

    That
    Is a real shame.
On you noise. Put so Marvel Mystery oil in and see if it goes away. It surely could not hurt.
My buddy bought a 50 Merc that had a tick in it like yours. Put a quart of MM in it and within 2 min the sound was gone.

Ugh I know this is an old thread but I hate when this happens. Person describes problem, everyone trouble shoots it. Then they post "got it figured out thanx" and never say what the problem ended up being. You know so when some one else has the same noise they can read your post and not start a whole new post etc.

Not only did they not say what it ended up being but the deleted the original fucking post! I'm glad you got you problem figured out but what a dick move man.

You just 100% summed up the situation I am in, searching for the problem on my engine, finding the exact description and then giving no details or answers to it. Nerdbynight idiotbyday

Do you get a special deal with a high post count?

  24. Try adding content, share what you may know, help somebody.
Post some good pictures that others may find interesting,
Or even try some comic relief,

Pissing around being a self appointed forum cop and calling the boss out forum cop style in his own thread isn't going to get you anywhere.

  26. Quite possibly that is true,
So that's when the forum cop shows up ???

How dare you berate that guy, now I have to berate you for berating him.

I'm sure you see that right ??
