Okay, I know threads like this can be pretty lame and I don't mean to bore anybody with photos of my grandkids, but . . . . . They live six hours away and we only get to see them a couple of times a year. They're here this weekend for a visit so we took the opportunity to take them all to a local cruise night. The late afternoon sun was really bright. The girls are ready to drive! Kenan loved riding in the hot rod. He was grinning like this the whole time.
I know how you feel ,mine are in from CA. till Monday. You are lucky only a few hours away, mine are about 3,000 miles away. I got their dad in the hobby though. When I am in CA the girls and I cruise in his '67 427 Camaro conv.
Definately, not boring, I've got two daughters age 3 and 10, my 10 year old has been going to shows and cruises with me since she was practically born, man that's some of my best memories, By the way you have some beautiful grandkids, keep taking them, I'm only 39, but I know the only way to keep this hobby going is to keep the kids interested, because we made need their votes one day considering our goverment, I'm truly concerened there may come a day when they try and get these beautiful, cl***ics, customs, and rods off the road.
X2 on that i love takin my boy out cruisin around and he loves it too.the look on his face and the expressions when we "get on it"make me smile from ear to ear!
Thats cool glade you got to spend some car time with them. My brother lives up in Elizabethon Tn, Johnson city theres a cruz there just about every sat night.
Great idea and I bet they will never forget it. Kids love going to the local ice cream or fast food place so why not take them in an old car. Habits start young. Next thing you know they are looking for an old car when they are adults to help renew those memories. You are a great steward to our hobby. X 100
Nothing boring about it,When I ever have grand kids that will also be happening. Its always lots of fun to enjoy time with the little ones. You never know when god will punch your card. So its always cool to spend time with the kids when you can. They look to be having fun.
Forget in deed! Kids are what makes this sport what it is! I love to see a kid strolling a car show with his/her hand clapsed tightly clapsed tightly behind thier backs knowing darn good and well thier parents have told them "LOOK BUT DON"T TOUCH" and these kids doing thier dead level best to do exactly that. Those are the kids I love to address. They walk up to our cars, peering wistfully over the window into the car. I smile and say "Would you like to get into this car and look around?" The look on thier faces tell the whole story!!!! These kids look at me like I just grew two or three more heads, but with a smile that says "ARE YA KIDDIN????". Watchin these kids swoon is just as endearing as the price of admission for the day!!! I open the car door and say "Now Remember this car is older than me". HA!!! but it gets the point across. These kids get it, sitting behind the wheel (knowing kids as I do) I ask "do you want to blow the horn", thier eyes say it all!!!! I say "Go ahead, TRY it". One would think I had just told them I had invited them to meet GOD!!! To the toot I jump and tell them they scared me! From there on, I have these kids attention. The moment is about as priceless as priceless can get. We work hard to make these cars what they are, from Rat rod to radical custom and yes even BONE stock, what he have is a heritage, sharing that heritage is as much a part of this culture as anything else we do, watch these kids, for they look up to us for guidence. By simply watching a child look at your car should tell you who to trust and who not to. I say, take advantage of the moment and let them do what kids do best, CHECK IT OUT!!!! 99.9 percent of them will remember that moment for LIFE! MAKE IT COUNT! Carrie
Thanks for sharing that. I spent saturday with my 11-year old grandson Luke restoring a George Barris Custom Minibike we found at a local swap, doesn't get any better than that. He's learning fabricating and painting skills on his first real project, cars to follow.
Drew,,what a great post,,,and it's good you and Skye have the mercury on the road now,,,you both get to drive to the cruise in. HRP
No kids here however I rememer being a kid and going to shows with my Grandpa. I loved every trip and show.
My wife had my niece for the day yesterday and when they came to see me at the shop I was working on my wifes custom gl*** dune buggy. I asked my niece if she wanted to check out the old cars and boy did she grin. I had her jump in the model A RPU and taught her where all of the controls are, then I let her start it up and fiddle to keep it running. She about had kittens she was having so much fun. Had her honk the horns and more smiles. I asked her if she wanted to check out the 67 Coupe Deville and she p***ed it up in favor of my Model A coupe(dad's old work car) we went thru the routine and she started this one too. I told her to pull the cable for the exhaust whistle and she was in outer space. Don't think she will ever forget the day. Hopefully I can get her on a car tour to see how much other people love these old cars too. we really do need to p*** it on so this fun hobby will last. Too many kids now days only care about a new computer or their tuner cars. Infect a youngster today in our great hobby and p*** it forward.
Those pictures tell the whole story ! So many smiles . I don't have any grandchildren but my daughter & her husband lives 15+ hours of hard driving away ! My wife & I just made that trip because we only see them twice a year ! Really ****s ! You are the lucky one to be able to share your hobby with your grandchildren ! RetroJim
