Being the little knowing 'newb' that I am...got a questiong about a Chev Truck cab I just picked up, and if anyone might be able to help me out in possibly figuring out what year it might be, I would really appreciate it 3 window - gas tank does not go behind the seat - and it has a little vent on the driver's side (between, say, the firewall and the door frame) that opens up just like the vent that is in front of the windshield... Any ideas??? I've googled the **** out of this, and tried finding pics, but not having any luck....and of course I don't have a pic to download at this moment...sorry... Not having the gas tank behind the seat....would that make it a 3/4 ton cab??? I'm just going to stop here, because obviously I have no idea...LOL!!! Just a chick trying to build her first hot rod (with some help). Thanks again for any replies
Without pics and the supporting lack of information....kinda hard to tell....hell it could be a 47-54ish AD with the tank removed.... could be a henway as well
If it's an AD, it looks like 47-48 had the gas tank under the bed (where it belongs): http://www.cl***icparts.com/frame-truck-years.html And, 1950 was the last year for the (driver's side) cowl vent. That site says the only difference between 47's and 48's is 47's have a floor shifter and 48's have three-on-the tree. There may be other differences.
47's have a hand parking brake near the floor shifter, 48's have a foot parking brake. The data plate would be on the driver's door.
Post some pics, if you can...1/2 ton, 3/4 ton had top side cowl vents (below the windshield) until first series '55. Side vents could be a COE cab, but without pics, it's hard to tell...earlier truck cabs (up to and including '46) had the fuel tank under the seat. Are you sure it's a Chevy? Older Plymouth truck cabs look like a Chevy, but have a larger cowl area, and I'm fairly sure that they have a vent on the side of the cowl. Does it have BOTH a cowl and a side vent?
How many widows total (split front)? Does it have tail lights? Are the head light up on the front fenders? Where is the gas tank? How do you know it's a Chevy?
The 47/48 cabs have one cab mount in the center while the 49 and later cabs have a cab mount that looks like a spring shackle on each side. Also the 47/48 trucks have a inside panel across the back of the cab to reinforce it for the center mount. I think the side vent went through 52 and 53 and up did not have the side vent. Other tell tale things are no vent windows up through 51 and vent windows starting in 52 along with I believe push ****on door handles in the same year. Still, a photo would help a lot here. <input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden">
A picture would clear things up a lot. Since you're calling it a 3w, I'm ***uming it's a 47-54 chevy? (that's the only year chevys I know of that had a 3 or 5 window designation) If it's original and the gas tank has NOT been moved, that would make it a 47 or 48. The firewall on a 47-48 is also different than the others. I'll try to find a picture...
Here is a picture of a 47-48 firewall... The front of it is smooth. (ridges were added here in 50) The top of the firewall is also smooth. (an indention was added here in 49) Here is a later firewall that has the ridges in the front as well as the indention in the top of the firewall...
Sorry...I could have added the center cab mount detail in my first post...it has that I will get a photo posted this weekend
Yes, the 52's have the side vents. I want to say that they went to the push ****on handle for 51... maybe not, but I seem to remember that there was one year that was no vent window with push ****on handles. Man, at one point I knew every difference between the years 47-54, down to the different hood side emblems for each year. . . not any more, its all a blurry mess now.
The driver's side crotch cooler is probably the best clue to year I've heard on this one. That and the rear center mount points to an early truck. No fuel tank in the cab means early but that is something often changed so its not reliable. '47 to '50 doors have the single gl***. '51 doors have wing windows and early type turn-down handles. '52 to '55 first doors have wing windows and push-****on handles. But doors are easy to change and not a reliable indicator. Embossing on the firewall as pictured above is another sure sign of a '48 and later cab. I love the flat '47 cabs. You don't see very many of them.
Okay....my firewall is like the second pic....indents on top and embossing on the front....Thanks for posting it oldrodkid!!! So..... indents on top of, and embossing on the firewall single mount cab "crotch cooler" on the driver's side (thanks for that term OldSub) and gas tank not in the cab I'm guessing it's a '48??? Like i said, I'll post pics then the experts out there can pick it apart This is so much fun!!!! Thanks for all the input!!! I really appreciate it
Just wanted to say, I had it confirmed that my cab is in fact a '48.... However, contrary to my last post...the top of my firewall is smooth, and not indented like that in the second picture....but there is some additional embossing on the face of the firewall, unlike the first photo..... Crazy Thanks again for the replies.....
if you need to see a 48 cab I have one here at my house with a camaro subframe and a bbc 454, Oh and a crotch cooler, & some bees! WC
Are you sure the bees are still hanging around??? I mean, I could swear I remembered you saying something about your awesome friend bringing over the sweetest bee catcher EVER!!! That thing has had to work by now????
