I like the looks of the small hole fake aluminum halibrand style wheels that are being made now. (kidney bean style?) they come in 15x5, and then like a 16 x7 or 8 or so.

thinking about these for my 49 Chevy coupe but I don't want to run a skinny mini tire in the front. this will be radial blackwalls. what size tires you runnin on a full size car with a 15X5 rim? got any pics?

I don't want to put too fat a tire on there and look dorky.

though of course by the time I get it back together I may decide on another look but that's my latest thought after my brain overload at the Goodguys last weekend.

145 would be WAAAAAAAAAAY too small. I want to see a 195 78 or something...

  5. I just did the same thing. I put 175's on the back, and 165's on the front.

    185 R 15

    or possibly 165 R 15

Take a look at any Volkswagen to get an idea of what it would look like.

205 75 15 on the GTO looks good. I'd have thought a tire that size would be too wide for the rim. guess not.

car reminds me of when I test drove an original red paint black interior 389 4bbl 4 speed 1964 GTO. guy wanted $800.00 for it but it needed a throughout bearing and I had no where to fiddle with it so I passed.

right on the money ...everything else looks too big , especially on a hiboy car....:D

  20. I'm pretty sure that 185/65R15 & 185/70R15 are the only 185mm 15" tires approved for mounting on a 5" wide rim.

The 65 series radials will be ~24.5" tall ... with ~7.4" wide footprint.

The 70 series radials will be ~25.2" tall ... with ~5.2" wide footprint.

Aren't the VW sized tires rated for a much lighter car? How much does that matter on a 50s car?
I need to run narrow wheels on my car, especially in the rear, and also wondered how big/tall was recommended on a 5" wheel.
Thanks for posting the original question.

195s I think work better than the 165 VW tires. I have a buddy that owns a 55 Chev. 235 pg and warned him about running 165s because of the weight. I run bias on all my cars and they work well. If the front end is up to snuff it should drive fine. That said I have 670x15s on my 55

Im runnin the 5.60 15 on my truck, iwas worried too but i had no choice as far as being able to turn it goes(no airide) i have never heard any bad comments and i dont think it looks too bad.hell with the power steering it makes it pretty damn nice.one thing i will say though i have hung some decent corners with no problems but i do my best to not push my luck either.depending on how heavy your ride is they may look "flat"even with proper inflation,i know im probably pushing the load limit on em but i have never in 7 years had any issues.

I had similar concerns about not going too skinny on my front tires and wheels for my '39 Chev coupe project. I still wanted the big/little look, but these aren't lightweight cars, and I want to drive it a lot, everywhere! So I went with 5" wheels also, and 195-75-15 tires. I think they're the perfect size and look for my car. But I can see with them mounted that a 185-75-15 would likely have been fine too.
