"I'll spot you a car length"

That statement is right up there with, “Cmon’ boy. Let’s go. Prove it.” and, “Make it three yards, motherfucker, and we'll have an automobile race.” Tougher words, really. Falfa and The Driver both had their guy pretty well sized up when they made the challenge. Here’s a guy who is spouting off to tens of thousands of people that he’s never met. You drive your car to the HAMB Drags, any year, and Jeff Yocum (flamedabone) will line ‘em up with you and show you how they do it in South Carolina. In six years, nobody has been up to the challenge.

Our little car club down in Austin, Texas U.S.A (The Yay-Hoos) got talking about this bold statement and the car/driver combo willing to back it up. That turned into discussion about being hardcore enough to drive your jalopy hundreds of miles to the track, race it to its very limit, risking breakage, chaos and mayhem and have the confidence that you can fix it if/when something breaks so it can get back home. That’s a small, rare, breed in these days of comfort, safety and convenience....even for hot rodders.

Guys like that should get some sort of freakin’ award!

Well, some of them just might. We decided to sponsor just such a trophy for the one person every year that can “Prove it”. Talk gets real cheap when it comes time for action. The Yay-Hoo Cup is for the baddest of the hardcores every year, from now on. There are no classes. There are no brackets. There are no head starts. Flathead, nailhead, HEMI, small block, big block, spray it, blow it, twin turbo it. Just drive your hot rod and line it up. Go quick enough and your name goes on the cup and you have bragging rights for the year.

Being the first year, we really didn’t know what to expect. Clif (Firedome) and Blake (Blake) took the lead on building a really bitchin’ trophy. At the track we had 14 guys sign up to be contenders for the Cup. They seemed to “get it”, you know? They understood what it meant. I especially liked the couple that knew they were beat by several seconds but wanted to get their name on the list to show that they were there, were gonna drive hard, and weren’t scared to tear it up. That’s what it’s about. And with any luck, this could grow into something really cool.

Oh, who gets to be the first one with their name on the Yay-Hoo Cup? Did you really need to ask? It’s the guy who inspired the whole thing to begin with.

Congrats to Flamedabone for taking the Yay-Hoo Cup this year!

But I know for a fact that there is at least one guy finishing a car that has his eyes set on 11.30 for next year...

This is what the HAMB Drags is about to me, drive your shit there, race and beat on it, drive home. Guys like flamedabone and elpolacko are the ones that are doing it and having fun. Yeah there are others, but those guys are a 1000+ miles. Makes me feel like I need to do better than my little 17.4 next year. I will have the fuel issue straight this week, I'm not even waiting until next year. The Yay Hoos rule.

Congrats Jeff, you are the 1st guy I thought of when the Yay-Hoo's started explaining how the winner was going to be chosen - I even said "like Jeff from Charleston?"

    Well deserved:cool:

This year was my first to ever drag race and who do I line up with for my second pass? A bad ass that beat me like a red headed step child!!! I think the Yay-Hoo Cup went to the perfect guy.

    He's 'THE ONE'.
When I heard that the YaHoos were doing this, I knew he could pull it off and would.
Glad to see him get recognition for all his hard work.

HELL YEAH! Congrats Jeff! In my eyes the Yay-Hoo Cup and the 14 guys who signed up for it embody a huge part of what the HAMB drags is about: Drive your hot rod to the races and go as fast as you can!

he should be able to keep it for the entire year, and if he wins again next year he gets to keep it again..if he looses..than he hands it over to the next guy and so on...just my 2 cents

awesome idea for a race..and a trophy cup

    Congrats, Jeff!

(I was one of the slow 15-second guys that signed up on that list, knowing I had no chance at all. Sure had fun beating on the Galaxie, three times down the track, though. :) What a blast!)

We debated doing it like that. With Jeff, it would have worked perfectly. Problem is when somebody we barely know wins it and there's a precident that the winner takes it home with them. We may never see it again.
