Last year I bought a 57-64 Olds/pont rear end with 35 spline axles. I cracked it opened to find a full spool inside. My chevy is gonna see as much track time as i can afford, but I am also gonna do a fair share or street driving. So I want to swap out the spool. I have been told that a 35 spline posi does not exist for this rear end? Was I told wrong? or am I stuck running a spool. please help!!! Diego
even on a good day, posi's are difficult to find for the '57-'64 pontiac/olds axle. from 59-64 31 spline posi's were offered. brent at Fabcraft metals is offering some parts and perhaps now complete units, but 35 splines are not available to my knowledge. perhaps oem dana 60 side gears and spiders could be retrofitted into the diff case?
Damn thats what i feared. Oh well looks like i gotta find a 9 inch. Glad the olds/pont rears weigh a ton, its off to the scrapyard!
not impossible, find a posi unit for a 31 spline, take the side gears out and have them lathed, and rebroached for 35 splines.
i'm with filthy frank and 55chieftan, these are good axle assemblies and worth modifying to make it work, or selling to some needy HAMBer who has been salivating over one forever. why would you just scrap it?
Why would you need a 35 spline? You running over a 1000hp? Thats over kill to the extreme. 31 is fine. My 12 bolt is factory 31 out of a 70 ss chevelle and will handle about anything i throw at it. Im running 500ft pounds of torque.
35 spline is what my axles are. I didnt choose them, thats what was in the rear when i bought it. I just want to use what i can that came with the rear. I dont want to spend extra dough for smaller axles.
Depending on what brand or type of 35 spline axle you have, they are usually not recommended for street use unless they are the ones made specifically for that use; Moser, Strange S/S, MW Master, etc.
