4 banger radiators

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Rod Ari, Oct 20, 2004.

  1. I´ve got leaking original radiator on my A Roadster. New ones are quite expensive. Can someone say where are the cheapests but guality should be allright?

I´ve been thinking about couple of choises: I give the old one to repair, it costs about 200-400 euros (more on dollars).

Another, maybe better way is to buy new tractors radiator. They are cheap in Finland, something like 150 euros. But I wonder can they keep engine cool enough. Has somebody knowledge?

Someone told me that there a possibility that tractor rads don`t cool enough? What about late 60`s Mustang radiator?
    Around 200-250€ in Finland.

    BTW. How`s the P-U?

  4. Yep - I'll add to what I said to Mart.
I use a Fiat tractor rad, can't tell you the model but it fitted a T grille shell perfectly, in front of a stock 21 studder, and it runs un-pressurised. Didn't lose any water on a recent 250 mile trip including motorways. Eventually got warm enough to produce a lovely orange fountain after about 20 miles at about 90 mph. Don't think it would be a problem with a pressure cap.
It's certainly kept it cool enough over the past 5 yearsPhil

  5. Thanks all.

I drove couple of hundret miles with leaking tractors radiator. That was the reason I put water temperature gauge on my car. Temperature was OK when there was water enough. I didn´t have pressure cap. Is there any risks to use that kind of cap instead of original type? Can water leak possibly to wrong places inside the engine ect.?

More info about 4 bangers cooling please.

    I think I buy one farmer´s special...

Bangers are easy to cool if everything seals and timing is reasonably advanced--a lot of problems come from Model A types who don't use the advance lever and chug around with the exhaust manifold glowing red.
problem numero uno is head sealing--not enough studs, old warped parts, fairly thin deck.
FelPro is in the process of releasing new type silicon-teflon-whatever the blue stuff is-gaskets for A and B, and I think this will likely make it easier to keep your combustion and cooling in separate containers.
Bratton's and probably Sacramento Vintage for sources.
