I got a job offer from O'Reilly. I found this by googling seeing how people liked working there. I have worked several years at an Auto Value store and also work 50 hours a week. I think I get paid very well and they offered me even more money to come work for them. I know they can pay different people doing the same job as much as $15,000 different from store to store so that could explain why he hates it so much. If you don't feel like you are getting your worth then you will hate your job. I have really enjoyed reading this topic the last few days.

When O'Reilly's came to town, I thought "Oh no...another corporate giant... here comes another bunch of dorks" Well, I've been pleasantly surprised! The counter guys (most of 'em, anyhow) really seem to know what they're doing, and they have a better selection than any of the other stores in town. All of a sudden, they are my biggest Auto Parts vendor and I'm glad they're in town.

  3. yeah I was thinking about quitting this damn service writer gig and everytime I go into the local OReilly's(around the corner & up the street)the guys keep trying to give me a APP - the wife says not yet-get the tools & shop paid off then go for it-I dont think I'll ever quit buying tools, equip -but was wondering how good of a company it was you know for a retail biz that is - thanks for the info guys

  4. actually , that was one of the first things i checked for. we do not have the 1 wire in stock at my store , but can have it the next day.....that's good to know when you are broke down on the road on a Sunday afternoon.

the normal 3 wire 10SI type alternators are in stock in the store right now.sorry , no special discounts...i don't want to abuse my employee discount

It didn't end up being my alternator but my battery. I dumped the Optima and got a normal one. No more issues.

While I was at the O'Reilys making the battery switch I too was offered a job there. All the employees did seem to be very nice, polite and knowledgeable. I was impressed. Hopefully I can keep that warm fuzzy feeeling in the future.

Good luck in your new position.

O'Reiley's is good, but it kind of sucks being 17, you can't buy anything in there when you're 17! They wouldn't let me buy body filler. What the hell am I gonna do with body filler?

Our local O'Reilys bought out our old Auto and Truck store. A lot of the original folks stayed on. One guy has helped me a lot over the years since, his name is Don, is probably 70ish and likes talking old cars.

Of course on the other side of the coin, I confused the shit out of a young guy the other day when asking for 348 Chevy parts.

They are remodeling all the Murray's in this area into O'Reilly stores.

They will slowly change all Checkers, Schucks, Kragen and Murray stores to O'Reilly because O'Reilly purchased the CSK corporation.

I work in a salvage yard and at times I am the counter guy. I am amazed at what people don't know about there own stuff. Guys who walk in asking for a spindle assembly and when you ask 4 cly or V6 they think your insane for asking and give you the look like what how am i suppose to know.
It goes both ways you have knowledgeable customers and you have knowledgeable counter guys. Some people are just there for the pay check and some are there to help a fellow car guy.

  11. cool beans, whatever floats your boat ;)

Now, for the reality: someone must have called corporate because it was something mentioned this week by upper management, at least at our store...

So I've been considering the Parts Store job as of laitly. I read alot of the post and I'll admit I skimmed some, I seen alot about the "Good Employee Discount" but I didn't see anything about how good it is.. How much is the discount is it a set % or does it vary? If it varies how does it compare to some of the other parts stores?

I work at an Auto Value store and we get things at our cost. I don't know how that compares to an O'Reilly store but it is pretty good. I think it's about a 30 to 40% savings. BTW O'Reilly hasn't called me back yet so I think I scared them away with how much I make at my current job and how much it would have taken to steal me away.

ive been working at advance auto parts for almost a year and i find it to be a great job. like everyone has said, its not the best pay in the world but it pays the bills for a college kid like me. and again its not necessarily the company but the people you work with and how good of a worker you are. moving up in the ranks is not impossible either. ive made manager position within the first 8 months.
yea everybody dogs the whole "what year is it?...blah..blah..blah" but i use it as a way to gauge the customer's level of intelligence. some people come in with a water pump and have no idea what it is because theyre "just making parts runs for their buddy." lately, with all the different makes, models and different options and different engine sizes, etc.. parts are starting to get very specific to different vehicles. youd think a car that came with two different size motors would have 1 maybe 2 different thermostats. last night at work, i had to put 5 different thermostats on the counter for one vehicle and match em up to the old one. i personally use the books just as much as the computers for reference because the computers dont always have everything.
as far as free installation of batteries, wipers, etc... i personally dont mind because i get a break from the same old "sir your total is...." and it gives me a chance to turn a couple wrenches. dont know how it is elsewhere, but at advance, we dont expect tips and "technically", were not supposed to accept them but hey, if the money is stuffed in youre pocket are you gonna throw it back at em. like i said, ive been working there for just shy of a year and ive only ever got 1 tip. (people are generous around christmas time ;).
with all that being said, if you enjoy meeting people, some average, some outta this world off the wall crazy, and youve got a decent understanding of how the parts that youre selling work, then parts stores are perfect. ..the employee discount is pretty sweet too.

I bought my swing pedal assembly and the Chevy truck master cylinder there.

I'm in Holland right now. will be home in a week &1/2.
I'll repost the part # for the peddle Assy.
or if yer really good you can find it on the mr gasket website.
    O'reilly sells Mr. Gasket stuff.

  18. I've been in retail 35 years ( not auto parts ) and the mentality is that if you're in the store they have a captive audiance, so they get the phone call because the phone guy can hang up and call Auto Zone or whoever. I don't agree with that thinking but that's how they train people. I agree with you. I had a counter person at NAPA that was in the middle of helping me ask a guy who just walked in the store if he could help him. The customer said " when you're done with him " and I said, he's done, and walked out and literally went across the street to O'reilly's.

  19. yes we do , i just ordered a bunch of Mr Gasket stuff....and with the employee discount there will be a considerable savings of $$$

6 weeks into the part time job and things seam to be going OK so far. of course, i work with kids 20-30 years younger than me that can be a bit immature sometimes and spend a good part of the time complaining of their lack of money...how did they expect to pay for that $30,000 pickup with a $10 an hour job? i drive a $800 pickup there and have money in the bank. i look at the job as a few extra bucks. customers have actually been ok, except for a few

Yeah, not sure why no one ever says, if it's supposed to be a secret or something but I don't really care. At Schucks we get 20% off.

Bullshit. Complete and utter bullshit. Sorry, bud, but you must have lost your reciept or something of that sort, because that is completely false.

Did O'Reilly or did Murray's hire the idiots? It's a shame either way, but that's done on a store level, not a corporate level, so unfortunately you got a bad store.

Same at Schucks, but I've gotten too many tips! Plus the manager of the Outback next door brought us food for changing a headlight on his girlfriend's car (didn't know who she was, but was just doing a favor) along with other goodies. We don't expect it, we don't suggest it, we even tell them "no" once, but many people insist. Sure makes a guy feel appreciated.
